  • Unfortunately, I suspect we're in the incubation phase of a likely superspreader event (the contagious kid who spent time in crowded college areas, two weeks before (a) symptoms appear and (b) one of those colleges goes on spring break).

I'm betting that, of the hundreds of people exposed and the couple dozen people who probably caught it, at least some of them will go on spring break, and infect other spring breakers who will then bring it home to their colleges. It'll have a couple months to spread there, then some of them will bring it home for the summer.

It sure would've been nice if we'd had politicians who were actually both sane and foresightful .... :(

  • I am confused by this article.

The headline says they want to change the borders, but I didn't see any details in the article about redrawing the border. They say they're interested in doing so, but there aren't any details. They say that Trump wants control of the Keystone XL pipeline, but the details they give simply say that he wants it built. It's like they shoved all the Canada-US relations stuff into one article, but didn't bother editing it or making it coherent.

On another note, Trump himself is confused:

"We protect Canada, but it’s not fair. It’s not fair that they’re not paying their way, and if they had to pay their way they couldn’t exist,” he told reporters.

Uh, no, Canada has protected our northern border. If we'd had to protect that on our own, we'd be a much more closed, paranoid and militaristic place. [Isn't that a scary thought!]

  • This 'poll' assumes a level of awareness and self-reflection that I'm not sure most Trump voters actually have.

Edit: the feelings quoted in the article seem to mostly be a reaction to the effects of his policies, not (generally) a dissatisfaction with the policies themselves or him personally. That means they'll find some way to justify both him and the Republican party in future. Nothing's changed, nor will it.

  • Uh, no. When he was president, Bush junior had to get special permission from the Canadian government to enter Canada, because he'd had a DUI conviction like 30 years earlier. Diplomatic passports / diplomatic immunity have to be granted by the nation being visited.

  • If you're unsure of your vaccination status, and Americans born after 1957 and who got their vaccination before 1967, should consider getting a booster shot.

Also, someone who was infectious spent eight hours touring college campuses, six hours in bars and restaurants, and three hours in crowded tourist attractions last weekend. Measles is one of the most contagious diseases known: in a group with no immunity, every person will infect an average of 14 other people. I'm mentioning the campus visitor because they exposed an awful lot of people,a fairly high percentage of whom are likely college students.

The bad news is that the rash that usually lets you know you have measles takes about 14 days to develope - and 14 days from the date of the campus visitor, at least one of the universities starts their spring break. Depending on who got infected and where they go for spring break, this could spread fairly quickly.

  • I don't understand why they put limits on these: must have been diagnosed before age 16, must have been diagnosed before age 46. GenX didn't get their issues diagnosed or treated, they were just told to suck it up and get on with it, and I know several who had to drop out of the workforce because of it.

  • Oh, good. Three hours in crowded tourist attractions on a Saturday afternoon, and six hours in bars and restaurants on Friday and Saturday nights. Plus eight hours touring campuses just a couple weeks before spring "super-spreader" break - with a disease who's characteristic rash turns up around Day 14. This can only end well ...
