  • Canada needs hundreds of thousands of kilometres in new bike paths and rapid transit lines.

    Electric cars are still cars.

Edit: in hindsight, this was a super polarizing statement and I meant it mostly as hyperbole. Ultimately I want to see fewer cars on the road and have them replaced with bicycles, pedestrians and transit, but to do so means not just building new infrastructure along side existing roads but instead redesigning cities to the point where cars are no longer feasible.

  • Frankly I feel uneasy when I'm driving around at 50km/h on residential streets. It's just too fast to be able to react to a kid or an animal jumping out from behind a parked car. So not only is 50 more lethal, it also reduces reaction time and increases braking distance. It's crazy that anybody ever thought this was a good idea to begin with.

  • In fact, treat all video game releases this way.

If people stop preordering or buying on day one regardless of the quality of the product, maybe publishers will finally take notice and start pushing games that actually function.

  • Yup. Crosswalks and pedestrian bridges may not seem like it, but they are actually car infrastructure. They are designed to allow cars to be as unimpeded as possible.

Real pedestrian infrastructure looks like streets that make drivers uncomfortable to be driving on. Cars and people should not be mixing.

  • I'm a bit torn. On the one hand, Subnautica is one of my favourite games of all time and suffers from not being entirely replayable, so another game in the series should be a no-brainer.

On the other hand, Below Zero was a major disappointment and I'm wondering if Unknown Worlds even understand what made the first game so special.

  • I should have been more verbose. We as a society (in North America especially but also elsewhere) have suffered through decades of redlining that has resulted in racial and economic divides.

The wealthiest suburbs are being subsidized by the poorest neighbourhoods with all the money being funneled into infrastructure that directly supports car dependency.

In order to participate in society, you are now required to own, maintain and insure your own vehicle(s).

I am suggesting that we've been robbed of a way of life where cars are not necessary to survive. Where your kids can hop on their own bikes and safely take themselves to where they need to go without worrying about if they'll be struck by a car.

I'm talking about active transport not as a hobby for the privileged, but as a normality for all.

  • There's this weird perception issue that I've noticed while driving. A car is able to cover so much distance so quickly that even small delays in time can equal a huge loss in distance.

Not that it really matters though because having to wait 30 seconds for a bicycle just means that you've lost 30 seconds. The amount of distance you have to make up is irrelevant, you're still only 30 seconds behind where you would have been.

And in any case, those same people will get to the parking lot and will circle around for minutes looking for the perfect spot closest to the front doors so they don't need to waste time walking.

  • I mean, if it was easy to opt out of then everybody would do it and that sort of defeats the purpose of having an alert system. This is designed to save lives; if I'm fast asleep and there's a tornado about to drop on top of me I'd like it if my phone would wake me up first, even a few seconds warning gives time to react.

    1. SNW Constitution
    2. Constitution Refit
    3. Sovereign
    4. Luna
    5. Miranda

I've flip-flopped a lot over the years about which are my favourites, some runners up include Defiant, Excelsior, Danube, NX Refit and Intrepid.

  • I definitely sobbed at the end. Andrew Prahlow deserves huge credit for his musical score, I can't even listen to Travelers on its own without somebody cutting onions.

All the conversations at the very end of the game hit me right in the gut every time I read them.

  • Don't sleep on this one. This game is a profound masterpiece and I recommend everybody play this without any story spoilers.

For those that aren't familiar and want to know more, Outer Wilds is a first person space-based mystery and exploration game. You are given free rein to take your space ship to any planet in the solar system. There are no combat encounters and no objective markers. Your immediate goal is set by you and your own curiosity. Depending on your pace you can expect to spend about 20 hours to finish the base game, and then another 10-15 for the DLC.

The big hook that got me to play was knowing that once you have played through this game to completion for the first time, you will never again be able to experience it in the same way. I've been chasing that feeling by watching other people do blind playthroughs on youtube and I've even forced one of my friends to play it while I watched him. Sort of like Subnautica, where ::: spoiler spoiler once you've played the entire game then the fear of the unknown that stuck with you at first is gone and the next time you play you realize how important that was to your enjoyment of the game. Outer Wilds is a game driven by your knowledge of events that already took place hundreds of thousands of years ago, you just have to put it all together. Once you've learned what there is to learn, you can't undo that. :::
