  • Like, I get that there's people who are mocking AI for the wrong reasons, and they're silly for that, but there are very real reasons to dislike AI in many applications.

Would chatgpt be able to do this if their dataset had consisted only of ethically obtained data where the authors had provided consent? My money is on no, at least not yet. The technology is in its infancy and has powerful potential, but is having its progress boosted through highly unethical means.

I'm so very much for the concept of AI, its a monumental technology space at its core. But it needs to be done right, and I fear that it never will be, and we will have to live with the sins of the existing models forever. I hope I will be wrong.

If we can reach a future where models are trained on entirely consensual data and the environmental impact of their training and usage isn't as dire, I'd be so happy.

  • Hey, no! How about we treat people in our prison system like people we are trying to rehabilitate hmm?

  • I was glad that when I started earning a lot more money, I was being taxed more on that higher portion of the earnings. In theory, this means that I am supporting more good things. I am disenfranchised, however, with the fact that clearly large corporations and the mega rich are not paying their fair share, and that often my tax pounds are being spent in direct opposition of my very existence (anti trans policy, reversal of climate policy, etc).

I care about taxes, a lot, but I don't care about being taxed a lot, as long as the heavy taxes I face are being used in a good way. If a small dip to my quality of life or excess earnings means that overall the quality of life in the country gets better, I'm super happy to see it.

  • Until recently, summer hasn't really warranted air conditioning, you could get by pretty neatly with just fans when it was particularly hot

  • Early days but the site seems orders of magnitude more responsive - not sure if its because of the new Lemmy version or because of reduced user activity from the migration but wow it is night and day

  • What is a "holo joystick"?

  • At least for trans people we all hate this. We want to compete as our actual gender

  • Which search llm is filtering out any of the content farm and seo stuff?

  • Yeah but you have no control over how other people spend their money. That second hand phone would still be there whether you buy it or not. But if you buy a new one you're giving google more money.

Ideally there would be no second hand google phones because nobody would buy them new, but that's not happening

  • Its a game that, by all means, shouldn't exist

  • Hard agree for that entire scene from Disco Elysium, that, the spoiler at the end that helps you to find the scope, and the payphone.

    Calling...

    Calling...

    Calling...

    Still calling...

  • Basically everything in Disco Elysium, there were so many moments that made my jaw drop.

The first 'ending' to Void Stranger.

Horizon Zero Dawn had some jaw dropping moments of storytelling.

  • Not sure, but if you're interested to know I'm sure the information is out there :)

    Edit after your edit:

Its impossible to know everything perfectly, but you can know some things to some degree and take action based on what you do know. Some will choose to not bother, and that is their decision to make, but it is a decision.

Anyway I think we're talking around in circles at this point. Have a good one.

  • I try to know where my software (and hardware and everything else) comes from for this exact reason, but I understand a lot of people don't

  • Interesting, I wonder how thats working under the hood with the guardian since their subscription model determines which cookies you can decline

  • I take into consideration as much as I can take into consideration. I can see the pathway directly from "I support the creator of hyprland" to "the creator of hyprland grows his platform" and I don't see any moral upside to supporting him, so this is a fairly easy calculation.

As you say, some issues are indeed more nuanced, and may have more complex balances when it comes to morality. I don't think "not promoting someone" is a punishment, it is a decision. I prefer rehabilitation over punishment, when it comes to individuals, where possible, but that's neither here nor there.

This truly has strayed so far into the abstract, however. We are talking about a guy who's nasty who makes a tiling window manager. The moral judgement can only be neutral or negative, theres basically no way that anyone could argue for a moral upside of hyprland, or at least I'd love to see someone try.

I don't support the TWM: explicitly neutral outcome, morally I do support the TWM: either negative or neutral, morally, depending on what you determine the likely outcome of your support would be
