  • The main argument from prosecution to this end was that the encounter happened in 2006 (ish, I might be off) but the hush money wasn't an issue until the election campaign. Therefore, they argued, it was paid (and covered up with false business records) to influence the election.

  • I'm neither young nor a racial minority, but I fully understand the position of not consenting to genocide. Is this really that hard for people? What is the argument in favor of supporting Israel? I mean, I know the state is doing a capitalism, but what's the argument to an average Joe?

  • Anything short of "all people are humans and we pass no judgment on the infinite variety of human expression and behavior" is offensively out of sync with reality. Any amount of perpetuating papal bigotry is out of sync with the teachings of the holy guy he's supposed to be representing.

  • I mean... Leviticus through Deuteronomy is one long string of genocides that were committed by Israelites and justified by "God said to." There's even a story in there where the Israelites don't want to commit yet another genocide because the army they're up against is bigger and stronger, and God tells them basically, "If you don't go do that genocide I'll kill you where you stand." This brutality seems expected in that context.

  • Official statement on the matter reads:

All students are treated equally at MCA...

Except this case proves that to be a lie. I'm sure there were boys in suits there. Unless boys are also required to wear dresses? If that's not the case, then this is a clear case of one student being treated differently from others.

  • I worry that not doing debates for this cycle would be the start of a tradition of not doing them anymore, ever. To some degree, I'm in favor of doing them even knowing they're only ceremonial.

But even as I write that out, I wonder if the whole thing needs a facelift. This kind of televised debate was made up in a world where television had the broadest media reach. It was a public service to broadcast debates, and there was a time when that might make up the majority of what a voter knew about the candidates.

Now we have the Internet and no need to shoehorn a Very Formal Debate into a prime time slot. Debates could be shorter and focused on the details of particular issues, allowing the candidates to converse more directly on topics. I would listen to a whole year of weekly podcast episodes like that leading up to an election.

  • I did this swap recently as well, on Fedora. I had to do literally nothing, as the drivers were already available and installed. I uninstalled akmod-nvidia to tidy up, but I suppose even that wasn't strictly required.
