  • Not to mention our prisons are full of white supremacists who will further reinforce this worldview and further radicalize the Nazi. Prison is part of the problem, not the solution. We just saw this, actually, with Jacob Chansley's Congressional bid following his release from prison.

  • The research at the time said not to ban it because it is reasonably safe for consumption and banning it would cause social unrest and distrust of the government. Check out "A Signal of Misunderstanding: The First Report of the National Commission on Marihuana and Drug Abuse", a report from a commission created by Richard Nixon with the passage of the 1969 Narcotics Act.

  • Not OP but I think they meant supporters of neoliberal economic policy and somewhat progressive social policies. "Liberal" like American liberal politics. The point being that they think they have good politics because they think trans people are people and aren't the kind of right wing fanatic we get a lot of. They're "left" to the extent that the American political spectrum allows for without understanding what "left" actually means, without being conscious of the overarching machinations that make then think their politics are good even as they continue to feed a system that intentionally blinds them to any honest criticism.

  • A lot has been said already, but it's worth mentioning that modern guns are much more capable of killing than guns 200 years ago. Back then, guns were very inaccurate and had to be reloaded one shot at a time and packed by hand. Now we have automatic weapons with large magazines that can be swapped out in seconds. They have less recoil and greater accuracy. Regardless of cultural and political issues, guns are just more capable of killing than they used to be.

  • It's also the case that she won against Frisch in the last election by only a few hundred votes in a district that's been solid red for a long time, showing that even Republicans in her district are growing tired of her. I feel like if we can give Adam a little push he can take it next time.

  • Did not read the entire article, but the first thing that stands out to me is the survey question itself:

Because things have gotten so far off track, true American patriots may have to resort to violence in order to save our country.

This language is extremely in line with fascistic rhetoric. So the people agreeing to this are likely Trump supporters. Maybe this is a good thing that most people think democracy is in trouble but only 23% of them think fascism is the solution.

  • Yeah, but nothing about the Lewinsky scandal was actually illegal. It's not illegal to cheat on your wife. They only found out about Lewinsky because they were looking for evidence related to the Whitewater scandal. The only thing criminal Bill Clinton provably did was lie under oath about getting a hummer in the oval office. That's a pretty minor lie, tbh, and they never connected him to any illegal activity related to Whitewater. They tried to make a huge scandal out of a clandestine blowjob, and the only people who cared were religious purists who never would have voted Democrat anyway. Instead, Republicans made fools of themselves on a national stage, and it cost them elections.

I'm not really disagreeing with you here, except to say the Republicans didn't really "get it right" with Lewinsky. They did seethe and writhe and dig their heels hard into religious fascism. But I thought it worth highlighting that the Lewinsky scandal was not as scandalous as they wanted us to believe, nor was it even the thing they were trying to pass off as scandalous in the first place. It was an excuse to open an investigation in the hopes it might reveal something that would stick. That's the same thing they're doing now. They know there's no connection here. They know there's no evidence. But it appeals to their waning voting base and gives them an excuse to find something that makes Biden look as bad as Trump.

  • There's definitely value in asking and not just googling. What you find on Google may not represent what the person making the claim is talking about. It's often best to let a person speak for themselves and place the onus where it belongs.
