  • Used or loaned games (provided you have libraries offering them in your area) are still a huge benefit for (most, ie physical media "enabled") consoles.

The subscription model is broken by default, regardless of Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo, and is only good and cheap until it isn't anymore.

Agreed that consumers have a say, to some extent, however some are too far "into the ecosystem" to either care or be willing to boycott or make a change that would inconvenience them, so they'd rather give in.

  • considering that Sony doesn’t offer PS+ Day 1 Launches, unlike Xbox

They don't offer them as often as on Game Pass, but there are some day 1 launches on Extra.

As with most subscription models, the value proposition will probably decrease as we move forward (one only has to glance at streaming services to see what awaits us in the gaming space imo...). Bummer, but expected.

  • Yes, thank you!
Microsoft has historically never been profitably selling consoles, which is certainly part of their shift towards different business models, including Game Pass and a focus on more than just Xbox, but PC and Cloud as well. They don't really have much of a financial incentive to sell consoles for that sake alone, they have to get people to subscribe to Game Pass and/or buy games (possibly digitally whenever possible) and the Series S is their best console for that, as the consumer is very much locked in.

  • I've been going back to The Witcher 3 to play the DLCs.
I finished Hearts of Stone and started Blood and Wine. I really enjoyed the former, but the change of atmosphere and setting of the latter is simply something else and it feels like a new game with how much content there is!

  • Yep, completely fair.
    They mention:

How long will DeckHD support the custom BIOS firmware?
We plan to continue providing BIOS firmware support for the foreseeable future. We are also optimistic about having the opportunity to work together with Valve to release official BIOS which natively support the DeckHD screen.

Which sounds to me like they haven't reached out to Valve and there's pretty much no chance of that (EDIT: official BIOS support) ever happening.

  • Yeah, I've learnt my lesson, haha, although I picked up a Pocket much for the same reason as you did (and OpenFPGA cores were barely getting talked about then, so I didn't have that many expectations in that regard) and my Super Nt has honestly been perfectly fine.

Cheers for the heads-up, I've been watching quite a few restoration videos on OG Xboxes and I've seen what those damned clock capacitors can do...
I'm actually leaning towards getting a 360, since it seems to have pretty good backwards compatibility, but most importantly (to me) the shmup catalogue is incredible on there.
Emulation is good enough, but my only PC is a Steam Deck, so that doesn't really cut it for Xbox and 360 atm.

  • Yeah, it's pretty clear the Dock is only made for 16:9 displays, unfortunately :/
I'm not extremely hopeful Analogue will patch in enough features/fixes to make it absolutely worth it, as they don't have a great track record with their "accessories" (the under-saturation of the DAC's Composite/S-Video output not being directly fixed after so many years does not make me hopeful tbh).

Really nice setup :) I've been looking at the OG Xbox from afar, as the Series X is my first Xbox, so I have much to catch up on, but I'm really happy with the - admittedly very incomplete - backwards compatibility so far.

  • How have you been liking the dock so far? I've been pretty hesitant to pull the trigger on it given its price (or rather given shipping and duties/taxes to add on top, hu).
(Also, interesting way to stand up the - I'm guessing modded? - OG Xbox vertically, haha)

  • If I already own the game on either platform, that's where I'll play it. I also don't emulate the Switch on Deck, as (and although) I have a modded V1 that I can OC and a Lite for portability's sake.
I especially prefer playing TATE Mode shmups on Switch with my Flip Grip, it's a game changer.
I also tend to favour physical games overall, so I might buy games on Switch more often than not (unless there are significant performance differences).
