  • Recently went down the rabbit hole (ok, I'm lying, I just read a Wikipedia article and one scientific study), and found out that the venomousness of the platypus has crazy implications for mammal evolution:

In spite of the rarity of venom among extant mammals, venom may be an ancestral feature among mammals, as venomous spurs akin to those of the modern platypus are found in most non-therian Mammaliaformes groups.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venomous_mammal

(The monotremes are the platypus and the echidna, which unlike the platypus isn't venomous but still has the spurs.)

  • It's fucked up that RT and similar sites with their ratings are so important for so many filmgoers. I would guess it's because film theatre tickets have become more expensive so people are trying to be as selective as possible with what films they spend their money on.

So people listen to the "average", go to the movies based on predigested opinions, and end up making their own filmgoing experiences, horizon and taste closer to the average as well. The risk in filmgoing is being minimised (which kind of mirrors the behaviour of the film industry so it's not without reason that the audiences behave like that, I guess; but it still sucks).

  • One of my family members participated in one such project, she wrote scenarios for a number of video lectures for schoolkids. It was bad, it was really fucking bad, and I could write an essay explaining why it was so, there's a wide variety of reasons ranging across the technical, legal, administrative, etc. Just one example: you're making a lecture about art? Yeah, go contact the copyright holders if they would be merciful enough to allow us to use the artwork in the video.

And your idea that the default approach should be that kids have no interaction with their teachers is honestly horrifying.

  • They already did something similar back in the day. I remember watching a music video some ~10 years ago where they placed an ad like five seconds before the end of the song, right at the musical climax, ruining the mood with surgical precision. I was absolutely infuriated and went off to Google wondering if there's a way to block ads. And the rest is history.

  • There's some dedicated Lemmy migration software, which copies your old subscriptions and probably other settings to your new account. At least, I remember using when I switched from .world to .dbzer0 quite some time ago. So you don't have to hesitate from looking for a different instance to register on.

  • Lots of people would like to "leave politics", as they find themselves under "vicious and unethical attacks" by politicians. However, those people's political existence was forced upon them, they didn't want to be a "political" object, especially not in the current landscape.

Musk instead took up his political role consciously, and used it to further attack and harm many who would prefer to be left in peace. He had the luxury to activate himself, commit far worse violence upon the people than he has been subjected to by the people, and when he realises he doesn't really like it, even though the issues he's facing are probably comparatively trivial, he (believes he) has the luxury to return to a more secluded, safe position.

It's really quite disgusting. And I fear he'll get away with it. But I am at least satisfied that his story (a supposed tech guru with his marketing bullshit and his comically immature behaviour) has damaged much of the aura of the modern technocapitalist elite.

  • Oh yeah, the death of an 88-year-old man who has been suffering from serious medical issues for months is so odd and unexpected that it is more reasonable to propose that the vice-president of the US personally killed him.

  • If you find any on archive.org, they're likely to be only for "loaning", i.e. you need a profile and can only view them within your browser, because they're still under copyright so they limit their distribution.

I'm not linking a workaround for that.

P.S. The JPEGs are better than PDF, the latter have some compression that's really bad on images.

  • Tbh I find that they were always surprisingly lenient on piracy. There are multiple subreddits about piracy websites, some of which had their Telegram channels blocked multiple times in the last year or two, while having no issues on reddit, and even some subreddits where people directly link to pirated content.

  • No. Qanon stuff mostly happened on 8chan, and even then there's no secret "historical" data to access. It was one or multiple obsessed and/or manipulative people spreading insane ideas anonymously, and idiots falling for it. There's no secret inside some system out there, it's essentially just organic stupidity. Some believe the guy who owned 8chan was "Q", it's not an unreasonable idea, but it changes nothing.

  • Considering all the stuff you've written, the let's say philosophical and ambivalent conclusion there feels inappropriate. A society that puts random innocent people without trial into a death camp is not stable. It all comes off as if the system just restructured the violence (who does it to who and by what means), rather than being on the path of eliminating it...

But it's an enlightening and valuable comment anyway, thank you. Do you know when was the deal with US made? I can't find it on Wikipedia...

  • Hmm, I tried it out on my phone and the results are visually uneven, most oddly the comment text is slightly smaller than the comment timestamp. I don't know if this is intended or really an issue though?
