Yes, that’s exactly how autopilots in airplanes work too… 🙄

I think camera FSD will get there, but I also think there are additional sensors needed (perhaps not lidar necessarily) to increase safety and like the point of the article states… a shitload more testing before it’s allowed on public roads. But let’s be reasonable about how the autopilot can disengage.

Pretty much my conclusion. Their writing style is completely off-putting and even if they have good points, I’m not going to endure their attitude to try to get to them anymore.

I’ve been online just at long, if not longer than them, and their “type” is nothing new. Nor is the solution: smiles and wave, boys, smile and wave.

Interesting, how do you set it up to do something like this?

I’m trying to get to the point where I can locally run a (slow) LLM that I’ve fed my huge ebook collection too and can ask where to find info on $subject, getting title/page info back. The pdfs that are searchable aren’t too bad but finding a way to ocr the older TIFF scan pdfs and getting it to “see” graphs/images are areas I’m stuck on.

I got in on a $45 for three months, unlimited everything. So far so good in LA, but I definitely get the “full bars but where’s my bandwidth?” at least once a day. They’ll put me on an unlimited everything for $120/3mos and I’m not sure I’d be happy with the slowdowns at that price.

I mentioned this in another post, but yes, resistor dividers are useful and have been used for ages. However things like component aging/damage and simply having enough headroom between different options limits the number of discrete states you can convey with a resistor divider.

I’m usually not a fan of overcomplicated solutions, but these identity chips aren’t that.

How do you have the cable correctly identify itself if you don’t put some smarts in it? Or are you saying we should only be able to buy expensive cables fully rated for 100W (or higher as the spec has been updated) — and how do you prevent an older cable rated for 100W from being abused in a newer 200W circuit?

Divider resistors are okay, but the IC is a better choice for future proofing and reliability.

The cable has to carry the negotiated power safely. It’s not unnecessary, it’s absolutely critical. I’ve personally seen and diagnosed the result of when this fails.

For your low power applications there is no need and the spec allows for that.

They don’t use cable ICs for basic power use. The IC in the cable (different ICs for different capabilities) is used for high power negotiation (ie the cheap thin cable won’t be able to do 100W, and the lack of chip ensures this safety requirement) and also for active equalization do you can get 40Gbps.

It’s a good thing, and cheap cables don’t need it at all. The system falls back safely.

Agreed except for the variables. You can pry the iterators i, j, k, the pointers p and q, and the temporary buffer buf, from my cold, dead hands.

Short variable names increase code clarity, particularly when the functions employing them are concise and named appropriately. There’s not much worse than using something like sourcedata[databufferiterator] instead of src[i]. It reminds me of authors who think that big words make them sound more intelligent. Needing or advocating auto complete in IDEs is a symptom of this kind of code smell, IMO.

Code should be clear and concise; it’s also why I fight for 8 character indentation; if your code is creeping across the screen it’s a damn good indication that the function might be too complex and should be broken up.

Holy crap that sounds godawful. Do what you’re doing and dance on command when the randomly timed notification comes in? Sounds fun to do on a lark when you open the app because you’re having a boring day or something, but as a daily thing?

Discord is sooo awful imo. Every server has annoying “rule bots” or people constantly changing the look/feel of the channels or trying to engage you with @all or @channel (which you can ignore but it’s still annoying)… even the more technical ones have the same vibe. IRC is so much easier to communicate in IMO.

Not just that, but it’s impossible to find a colour laser that’ll do 11x17 and duplex. I think my only option is a small office printer lease.

It’s a compromise; the discussions aren’t lost, Reddit doesn’t get to have the data anymore, but like you said, there’s no engagement. The engagement needs to occur over here with new topics, possibly linking back to the copied old ones.

Mine lasts about 3 days before I have to charge it, but I’m also largely ignoring it and use it as a watch / timer / notification reader. I had one with the cell modem but when I broke it was during the pandemic and just wasn’t on-site where I’d often leave my phone at the desk.

This. Trying to find anything in a brick and mortar store in the last decade has been such a godawful experience that I don't feel the least bit sorry for them. Groceries are largely delivered (not using Instacart, but the store's own delivery or pickup service), tech stuff is all aliexpress or amazon, clothing I still largely go in to buy, but don't buy very often. Appliances? Research the shit out of it online and usually order online from a local retailer with a decent website. Heck, even hardware is online through Home Depot and auto stuff is either rockauto or similar.

Many PDAs, DVD recorder on the computer (never for TV), no to webtv or 3D TV, many rpis (and banana pis and countless other embedded boards)... internet radio player... not as a separate device.

Despite spending my entire life designing and improving tech, I am actually kind of tech-adverse. A good laptop, good phone and good internet connection, and all the gadgets tend to be left behind. Smart home? Yes, but it runs off of HomeAssistant. Alexa? Yes, but only because the non-hive-mind solutions aren't quite there yet. Heck, my oven/range doesn't even have a timer.
