  • Yes please! Lemmy.world and lemmy.ml shouldn’t make up the majority of my feed.

I think best case scenario, you have themed instances based around art, tech, politics, news, gaming, food, etc, and the largest communities are hosted there. Then you have “catch all” instances like lemm.ee which federate with everything, there can be as many of these instances as needed as the user base grows. These types of instances should be where the bulk of the new user accounts go, assuming just an average user looking for a /all replacement. Curated instances like beehaw allow for a more fine-tuned experience, but should still function basically as a catch all and not as “hosting the content” instance.

However I understand that building up to that is damn near impossible with the current infrastructure. We would basically need a means to migrate an entire community to a new instance, while simultaneously updating everybody’s subscriptions to reflect the new home of the community.

  • This is how Lemmy should be, with the majority of the content being hosted on themed instances. Easy to browse if you want to focus on something, otherwise use Lemm.ee or other “catch all” instances if you want a more /all experience. Lemmy.world and Lemmy.ml shouldn’t host well over half the content I see. Easy targets for DDOS and then their users are screwed AND their hosted content stops federating.

Spread out is the way to go, it’s the whole point of the fediverse.

lemmyloves.art seems like a name that could catch on. I’m sure if it became a prominent art community on Lemmy people would donate to support the upkeep.

  • None of this applies to the average user though.

The vast majority of devices sold come with Windows or MacOS, so you’re suggesting that the average Joe should wipe their drive, pick a distro, and self-install and maintain a new operating system.

You and I know that it’s not as difficult as it sounds, but that’s asking a lot from people who can’t even bother to reboot their system when there’s been an update pending for 10 days.

  • I suppose it has to do with surface area. You could toss your drumsticks in buffalo sauce, but there’s a couple problems. It would be way messier and you’d end up with even more sauce on your face, and ultimately there’s more meat to surface in a drumstick so you’d end up with less sauce in each bite, including plenty of chicken closer to the bone with no sauce at all.

    So-

    1. Convenience
    2. Maximum sauce
  • Do they think they have to sit and watch them grow?..

  • Y'all dumb motherfuckers want a key change?

  • I (foolishly) assumed we were talking about the obviously morally abhorrent stuff.

  • I jumped the gun then with assuming it was the latter. My b.

  • Sounds like you and lefty are concerned with protecting illegal activity here? Fuck that. I’m not okay with Lemmy being a hub for society’s most trash individuals.

  • You’re right that even among the republican base, abortion rights area slightly majority accepted, except in the case of the far right and religious extremists. I don’t really think the republicans in office care about religion at all, I think they care about money.

The only thing then that makes any sense to me is that declining population growth is seen by some as an existential threat to capitalism and their way of life. Removing abortion rights means more population. They don’t care if that population is going to struggle with a difficult life, they only need them to work in the factories and serve them hamburgers anyway.

It’s a bit conspiracy-like, but I struggle to come up with other explanations for this. I don’t accept that they’re doing it because of their strong religious values 🙄

  • I just hate that I can’t refer to a bundle of sticks properly anymore without being called a homophobe!

  • Really good read, idk what the downvotes are about.

  • I’ve never seen a more succinct comparison of cats and dogs.

  • Swimming...

    Jump
  • Watched this Kurzgesagt recently, a couple minutes in he basically explains how air acts “thicker” for smaller creatures like insects. They effectively do swim through the air!

  • You can’t paint such huge populations with a single paint brush, and even saying “generally” doesn’t cover your complete lack of empathy. Many or even most of those 16 million made choices that they thought were right at the time and tried to live good lives. You think these are the people that emptied pensions and raised prices and drilled the oil despite scientific warnings?

Sure, statically some of them did. But most of them did not. Most of them worked hard, harder than our generation, and provided for their families.

Having that much hostility for an entire population is no way to live your life.

  • Great username up for grabs, who’s gonna snag @tacticalbuttcheeks first?

  • Anybody see last night’s new episode? Lmao.

No spoilers- it was a strange one and at first I was unsure how I felt about it, but they won me over with the brief Klingon bit.

  • People indulge constantly in things that are unhealthy for us. It’s basically our favorite shit.

Within reason and as long as they’re not hurting anybody, try not to judge too much. Everyone has different lived experiences and find their own ways to cope.

As for movies.. if you’re shooting a historical film of any kind, it would be silly to pretend people weren’t smoking then. There are also characters in every genre that are just written as smokers. We’re human and imperfect, and stories include imperfect people.

As for the actors themselves.. they use some kind of herb cigarette that doesn’t include nicotine. Actors can usually hold the smoke in their mouths and not inhale, which makes them much less harmful.

And even if none of that were true and they’re just lighting up real cigarettes, money. Actors get paid, and unless the actor is smoking in every scene for months on end, it’s unlikely to amount to any long term damage.
