I think it's good for broad, serious/informative discussion but lacking for more niche or casual stuff. Niche is just because there's not enough users. Casual is probably partially that, but also because Lemmy just attracts a more serious crowd. Even the general gaming communities disproportionately trend towards serious discussion of industry problems. And a Lemmy that's better for casual stuff is probably worse for serious stuff.

There were a few attempts to make metric time. Revolutionary France tried it and Swatch Internet Time was an attempt by a Swiss watch company during early internet days, honestly it was probably a promo stunt rather than an earnest attempt, but a few things supported it, including PHP and the MMO Phantasy Star Online.

I think it's worth noting that the "glorifying soldiers" tactic doesn't really work; the US military routinely falls short of recruiting goals, and among people who do join, patriotism isn't a common given reason.

And referring to all your sports competitions as World Championships when the only teams that play are American.

That's literally only Baseball (and they did it for marketing,) and baseball happens to be the North American sport with the most popular international championship, the World Baseball Classic (actually I don't know whether WBC or Olympic Hockey is more popular, but Hockey has a separate international championship from the Olympics.) The Football championship is called the Super Bowl, the Basketball championship is called the NBA Finals, the Hockey championship is called the Stanley Cup.

I said Quebec because of the victim complex and all the chest beating about independence that goes nowhere (Quebec at least has a better reason than Texas or Bavaria.)

To me it sounds like the German Quebec. Then again, I wouldn't exactly say Quebec "isn't" the Canadian Texas.

I would love to say that I have hope that Canada will be willing to break that treaty, but Canada is still financially dependent on the US, not to mention that people who care a lot about "muh Canadian identity" would definitely be against taking Americans.

Honestly I think secessionism has more of a chance than Americans being let into Canada.

Personally I think in four years time it's possible Australia and UK (but even then UK Labor is transphobic) might be the last bastions of progressivism in the West (Australia voted out their right wing party last year, and the UK Conservatives don't seem to have a path to re-election.) The rest don't have recent enough memory of how right-wing populism doesn't solve problems. USA does, but USA has the problem of hyperpartisanship to a degree that some argue Democrat and Republican constitute two separate nations.

As someone who's first election being voting age was 2020, he's the best president of my lifetime, that's not a high bar to clear, but he has.

The only reason I'm not an advocate for this is because this would mean abandoning LGBT people, minorities, and women in red states.

I don't neccesarily have strong opinions one way or another on this, but "choice state vs fetus state" is starting to remind me of "free state vs. slave state."

I think irrationality is evidence of our control if anything. Animals are generally more rational than us (I say this as someone who hates people who worship rationality.)

I don't think animals are completely emotionless, but a lot more of what other animals do can be explained by survival instinct than humans.

It's going to be mined somewhere. Acting like American land is too sacred to be mined for lithium while mining has equally bad if not worse effects on other places is basically NIMBYism for resource extraction. And while BANANAs might be effective in urban development, I don't think too many people and especially not developed worlders want the effects of that if the philosophy is applied to mining lithium.

The increased normalization of stereotyping. I try to stop myself, but I don't think I'm immune either. It just feels like people are just more okay with seeing that someone is a certain nationality or race and assuming things than they were 5 - 10 years ago, regardless of political orientation. Some communities dislike it when you don't play into the stereotype, even.
