Important to note that many Diogenes stories are long after the man died, and there’s some mythologizing with him.

Here’s a fun story though:

Menippus in his Sale of Diogenes tells how, when he was captured and put up for sale, he was asked what he could do. He replied, "Govern men." And he told the crier to give notice in case anybody wanted to purchase a master for himself. Having been forbidden to sit down, "It makes no difference," said he, "for in whatever position fishes lie, they still find purchasers." And he said he marvelled that before we buy a jar or dish we try whether it rings true, but if it is a man are content merely to look at him. To Xeniades who purchased him he said, "You must obey me, although I am a slave; for, if a physician or a steersman were in slavery, he would be obeyed."

My grandfather went to school for geology in the 60’s (US), and told me that plate tectonics was taught to him as a new/tentative thing.

I wonder if some element could be related to being in the south - plate tectonics doesn’t really align with creationism that well, and too this day you can’t really safely teach human evolution. (Yesterday, I informed a high schooler that dinosaurs were real. He was pretty happy to learn this.)

Wasn’t a substantial element mapping during WW2? That was when they discovered the patterns/changes in earth’s magnetic field over millenia.

When I was in high school, in government class we had an assignment where we had to draw different districts for Texas - that depending on how you divided it, you could make either party win.

I’ve been reading True Sex: The Lives of Trans Men at the Turn of the 20th Century. The pattern seems to be that the “tricked the woman into a relationship” thing would come up after the guy had been outed by police or something - throwing your husband under the bus to not be tarred by the association with queerness. Or a couple of cases where a jilted lover got revenge by revealing the “secret.”

I don’t get Shorts. I can’t watch them on my PlayStation, if I click on one on the phone app it’ll disconnect the PlayStation and force me to watch it on my phone.

If you try to upload a video that is less than a minute long, it forces you to do Shorts.

I also don’t get why opening up a community thread or something pauses the video I’m watching on the PlayStation.

I’ve also noticed lately that when I connect the phone app with the PlayStation, about 30% of the time, the video will play extremely slow without sound. I have to close and reboot the YouTube app on the PlayStation to watch anything afterwards.

It’s so fucking stupid. And the gotcha of “well, you don’t want the masculine trans man in the bathroom with your daughters” doesn’t work either. It’s not about bathrooms, it’s about not wanting us to exist.

One of the funniest ways that these people get hacked is that you can give someone an NFT. Like it’ll show up in the wallet, no way to get rid of it. So you make a fake BoredApe or whatever other stupid JPEG, with a “smart contract” that essentially boils down to “steal everything” if the person ever interacts with it. Iirc some of the bigger name people have a bunch of these fake, toxic NFTs that they can’t interact with in any way, just hanging out in their wallet.

The thing is - they use these disasters to punish communities they don’t like.

In Oklahoma - I am a (non medical) volunteer for the Medical Reserve Corps. There were calls when small towns like Stroud were hit in 2023 - there was no mobilization for Tulsa in 2023. Both our governor and our lieutenant governor were completely out of the picture, no one even knew who was in charge to even declare a state of emergency. Places in Tulsa were without running water or electricity for weeks after. No one cared - Tulsa is mostly Black and votes Blue.

We are looking at severe weather in Oklahoma tonight. I guarantee, if it takes out a small town like fucking Tishimongo or something - a place that voted for our governor - they’ll get help. If it’s Tulsa - lol.

Gardner’s “multiple intelligences” model is a nicer way to think about intelligence, but it’s not really quantifiable in the same way. (How would you measure how “ecologically” intelligent someone is?)

It’s very appealing to think that we have some sort of “int” stat like a Dungeons and Dragons character, but I don’t think it’s really that valuable. If the IQ/the “g factor” measures anything, it’s probably something about being able to quickly process visual information. I have a relatively high IQ and think that’s the trait I have that is being measured (from the testing they did in the teen torture facility I spent my adolescence in - my high IQ meant that I was a dangerous, manipulative liar of course.)

If you have two and a half hours to spare, I think this Shaun video is a masterwork of science communication.
