  • North korea had comparable standards of living to south korea until the late 1980s, mid-1990s when they stopped getting bankrolled by the soviet union. Leaning on the war in the 1950s to explain modern NK is factually wrong. The reason North korea is in such a poor state is because

    1. Their country clings on to a pseudo-scientific economic ideology which has destroyed their country
    2. Their monarchist dictatorship is hell bent on an unsustainable nuclear weapons program and regularly threatens to annihilate their neighbors in a blaze of atomic glory. Sanctions against North korea are designed to prevent them from acquiring fissile materials for further development of weapons of mass destruction. Considering the stakes here, hitting them with sanctions is letting them off easy

If the North Korean government cared about its people (which it doesnt) then they would do 4 things:

    1. End their nuclear ambitions
    2. Implement market reforms to allow the free flow of trade and end centralized planning of their economy
    3. Free all political prisoners and the 3 generations of their family which are considered guilty by association, and end the mass system of concentration camps which they run
    4. The Kim dynasty must step down and allow free and fair elections

None of these things will happen because North korea exists solely to be the personal theme park/prison state for Kim Jong-Un, who does not care an iota for the wellbeing of the North Korean people

  • North Korea does not allow its own people to leave. The situation is nothing like Gaza, and to claim otherwise is some dipshit 16 year old tankie nonsense. North Korea is the most oppressive country to have ever existed

  • Really? It feels like theres a lot less diversity of thought on the internet now. I used to be able to jump on stumbleupon and find a website about psilocybin, or someone's insane ramblings about the new world order. Now its all just crap. Used to be the world was too far away, used to be the stars didn't have much to say.

  • I've found it comforting to embrace the inevitability of my death. People are afraid of fascism, climate change, nuclear war, terrorism, mass shootings, car accidents and fire becausebthey personally fear violent death. Simply throw your hands up and say "I will die - and theres nothing I can do about it"

If your concern is more abstract, such as a fear for the downfall of the American republic, I would say that we're all a little too old to be believing in fairy tales

  • Splitting lanes is not legal in the vast majority of the United States but idk where you're from. It's very very rare for me to see a car blow through a red light outright. Both cyclists and drivers should be punished for doing so.

I dont have a problem with bikes. I think there should be huge amounts of protected bike lanes so they can have their own lanes, and i think a lot of streets should be declared off-limits to motorized traffic and only allow pedestrians. But I also think that a lot of people who ride bicycles on public roads are some of the biggest assholes out there

  • Communism is and always has been a cult. Socialism is a political ideology. Communism contains all the hallmarks of religion: the belief that you have the one ideology which explains everything and can literally predict the future (dialectical materialism) and is explicitly a plan to murder your enemies to achieve an eschatological end-time which is both poorly explained (Marx basically never explained how a perfect communist society would actually function or what it would look like) and also unachievable (after the revolution, communists tend to spend all their time purging and massacring other communists who aren't communist enough). Communism even suppressed science which they believed was incompatible with dialectical materialism - relativity, quantum physics; despite the Soviet union having a strong nuclear weapons program, for a period in the 1940s and 1950s these theories and areas of science were considered counter-revolutionary. Same as in China during the cultural revolution. They killed heretics the same way the catholic church and spanish inquisition did because communism is a cult.

The revolution never ends - communism is impossible. Not because of "human nature" or anything like that, but because communists NEED enemies the kill. Murder is built into the religion.

  • I almost never see cyclists ride in a legal manner. They're motorized vehicles when its convenient to them and pedestrians when its not. They split lanes, blow through red lights, and they loooooove to go out in big groups and take over the road

  • People who code often come to their technical opinions via aesthetics rather than legit technical reasons. On 4chan/g/ there are people who only code in C, or only code in Lisp, or only code in Ocaml, and there's nothing you can tell them to convince them to use a new language because their hero is Terry Davis and they imagine themselves as living in Serial Experiments Lain. They code on projects with no real world applicability. I think the appeal behind Terry Davis is that these people are all building their temple to God, in a way.

  • If you guys think we're getting a truth and reconciliation hearing after this administration, then you have too much faith in the dead institutions which led to Trump's election. The United States is over, after this. 100 years from now it will be obvious in hindsight

  • He has pretty generic right wing opinions. In a debate with Destiny, he said something pretty close to "Rich black people commit more crimes than poor white people".

Personally, I stopped giving a shit about other peoples' racist opinions on the internet. Call it "outrage fatigue".
