Could you be more concrete? In what relevant way do you think it does not work as an instant messenger? Keep in mind that Delta Chat is not a theoretical thing and it works as well as any other messenger.

That’s just open source, not decentralized. I can’t find a definition of decentralization that would even make it vague. From Wikipedia:

Decentralization is the process by which the activities of an organization, particularly those related to planning and decision-making, are distributed or delegated away from a central, authoritative location or group and given to smaller factions within it.

Signal has a central authoritative server and to use it with any other server you have to modify the source code.

Because delta chat is using an open protocol (email) and you can run your own servers meaning it is decentralized unlike Signal. Also it is actually anonymous unlike Signal, so you don’t need to give anyone your phone number and people can’t find where you live just by knowing your username.

I now read that you didn’t note signal but you have it in the image and it’s a centralized app.

Delta Chat aims for “WhatsApp-level” simplicity and these webxdc zips are just called “apps” when regular users interact with them in the Delta Chat app.

Yeah the spec is at https://webxdc.org/ and it is implemented by Delta Chat and a couple XMPP clients.

This post is about private messaging, not social media.

They are apps that use a messenger as backend, so basically your conversation with someone else has all the state of the webxdc. In Delta Chat that would be the encrypted email thread.

To use a webxdc share it in any of the mentioned messaging apps.

I mean compiling an app to do that seems quite a high barrier to entry. I guess you could use the web version on mobile too maybe?

P2p encrypted file sharing is sadly still an unsolved problem even though file sharing is basically the whole premise of the internet.
