Tonga Poised to Be the First Country to Recognize Rights of Whales

  • on and off for about two years in varying forms, but i'm still in the process of putting my archive up

  • Edit : also, did you have a look at Piefed ? https://piefed.social/

yes, this is essentially our long-term backup plan if Sublinks doesn't work out for some reason

  • hilariously, this article has the guys going to this all upset because it's being characterized as far-right, even as they admit "yeah a lot of the people going to this are fascists and pro-eugenics"

  • Obsidian.md; for fun, although i do tend to write blog posts about the things i read

  • Isnt nigeria basically the only african country right now that isnt a shithole right now?

Nigeria probably has the most theoretical wealth available to it of any African country because it's super rich in oil, but there are definitely other countries that have it better than Nigeria (South Africa, Cape Verde, maybe Namibia or Kenya if you want some deeper cuts). Nigeria also has a metric fuck ton of problems (religious tension and sectarianism, terrorism, an openly corrupt political system which likely stole the last presidential election, and constant economic turmoil) that severely rob its capability to exploit its riches. and yes colonialism is a big part of that, it has fairly bad deals with major corporations to exploit that oil

  • well... no, because you've just described removing several of the distinct things that define what a karaoke bar is, lol

  • as a matter of fact: i came across a vandalized charger on Tumblr just now, so it does appear to be happening in at least isolated cases

  • it might be happening and just flying under the radar, honestly. someone was arrested earlier this month for trying to firebomb a Tesla dealership, and i'm going to assume this is not an isolated sentiment

  • incidentally: lots of actions happening on March 1. show up to one or start one yourself if you get the chance, they've been quite the hit and they make great opportunities to network and propagandize

  • you're being very weird in this specific chain of comments, and it's unpleasant to read and dragging down otherwise pretty decent conversation. dial it back, or you'll catch a temporary ban.

  • hardly surprising. we talk about enshittification today but Skype was one of the most egregious offenders before the term was even coined, in late-stage Skype (circa 2016-2017) i couldn't even run the fucking thing without lag because of in-line ads. the user experience was frankly awful, and once you've used something like Discord or Zoom there's just never any reason to go back.

  • of particular note here is the size of this town-hall--over 2,000 in attendance, apparently, which Crow says is by far the largest he's even had:

About 1,400 people packed into the main auditorium, with a few hundred more watching from a screen in an auxiliary room. Several audience members pushed Crow on the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, saying they were skeptical of the cuts and the vilification of government workers.

Crow told reporters that this was his biggest town hall in his four terms in congress—by two or three times.

the grassroots energy to oppose this stuff is clearly there, but it remains to be seen what Democrats do or if they get the memo as an entire party

  • What I did state was that they should be endorsed based on their merit and not a headline pushing them because of their transition.

this is just chickenshit "I don't see color!" rhetoric but applied to trans people—if you come back with this an additional time i will ban you.

as an aside: irrespective of whatever nonsense idea of "merit" you have, it's actually incredibly significant to be a visible, high-profile trans person of any kind, and most trans people embrace the role of being publicly trans. you can also be the most clearly "qualified" trans person ever and it just won't matter, because existing as a trans person opens you to vitriol, hate, cries that you're a degenerate diversity hire and grooming children, unprosecuted calls for your violent murder, and and increasingly state-sponsored misgendering and denial of your gender identity.

  • RTFA, she is a vice-chair of the House finance committee (and she might eventually have become chair if she weren't term-limited):

Titone was first elected to the legislature in 2018, becoming the first transgender member of the Colorado General Assembly. She is term-limited in the Colorado House, where she is vice chair of the House Finance Committee and chair of the Joint Technology Committee.

she also serves on the appropriations committee. a lot of her political involvement revolves around the handling of money currently, so i would say she has pretty "merit" case for being Treasurer

  • I’m not sure a couple people with signs out front of his space centers and electric car showrooms are going to move the needle, but hey if that’ where you want to spend your time, have at it.

unfortunately the best course of action here is not one to telegraph or put into writing literally anywhere, so you will have to be content with this for the foreseeable future

  • the going theory is that this is effectively the western division of NetEase getting axed because they're not important enough and "cost too much" to keep around

  • I’m starting to feel like having a particularly leftist environment where the most frequent message is “we’re fucked the there’s nothing we can do about it” mostly just works to prevent the people who might actually get together and do something from doing anything at all.

admittedly, i suspect most people on Lemmy who can do something already are, but yes it's very annoying that the pervasive sentiment seems to be "everything is getting worse, nothing is getting better" as if this is serious politics

  • resetERA is an unusual source for this, but the OP is just direct screencaps off of LinkedIn of people saying they were laid off, and it's hard to get more definitive than that in terms of sourcing
