  • Sounds a lot like the Android 4.X and 2.X days. Its unfortunate that Google over time has locked down Android more and more. I mean having the option to do wild stuff is better than not having it.

The only real usecase I could see is with a proper Desktop Mode like DEX on High end Samsung phones or Motorola's ready for. Where you can plug your phone into a Monitor and attach a physical keyboard and mouse. In that case, yeah it would be neat to break out of the Android jail.

  • I 100% agree.

Love it or hate it, Android is extremly fast, polished, stable and easy to use, not to mention it has gigantic library apps that are built to work perfectly with a touchscreen.

I honestly don't really get what there is to gain by using "Desktop Linux". I mean sure some proper Programs offer way more features than Apps but using them on a 6.5" Touchscreen sounds like pain.

  • 100%. I don't get how people still enjoy this slop. He was alright 6 or 7 years ago but now it feels like mass media thrown together crap. Same as well for MKBHD honestly. Dude is reviewing nothing and always just sharing first experiences.

  • Thats unfortunate to see. I know its a really unknown brand but their Flagships were always really interesting options if you knew about them.

They also were one of the very few manufacturers who used Exynos chips (when they were good in the S6, S7 days) besides Samsung.

  • Doesn't have anything to do with updates, but yeah hardware might fail over time. Thats a risk you gotta take.

Yeah thats partially true, but many cricital issues get patches with Google Play Protect Updates. Also at least I'm not aware of any big hacks that happened on old Android Versions.

True yes, but id say 99% of Apps still support Android 9 which is 5 years old.

No they don't Software becomes more demanding and so things overall feel slower. There can be cases where stuff like the battery can't supply the voltage and thus the CPU can't reach its peak Clockspeed, but thats pretty rare

No it became much easier since all phones now are made with glass or plastic. They now can be opened from the back which means you never have to touch the Display - the most fragile part.

Yes thats an issue but if your phone was somewhat popular you can still easily get them. I for example replaced my Galaxy S6's screen protector last year. Still was able to easily buy one.

  • I mean I agree on some Points and I too agree its in many ways a overpriced undercooked phone but the Note 5 comparison is absolute nonsense.

I'm the first to recommend second hand flagships but the Note 5 is maybe a fun secondary phone but definitly not daily drivable and recommendig it to people who don't know what they will get themselfes into is criminal.

Like just the fact that he implies that the Note 5 SoC is comparable in Performance to the Fairphone is braindead. You are comparing a Cortex A57 to a A78. There are 6 generations between them.

Also what are these doofusus in "The Lab" doing. Would it really have been that hard to pull up some common CPU Bound tasks like rendering websites, compressing files, ... . App opening Tests are often limited by Network speeds and IO Speed and tell you very little about the in App Performance.

  • it doesn't matter, they don't stop working If you are a couple of Versions behind. App developers have adopted and Always Support multiple old Versions.

Security - yeah maybe but I'd personally would feels 10x safer using a Stock Android Phone that doesn't get updated than a up to date Samsung.

  • Trust me I know my Z compacts ;). I got em all but the Z3. Its hard to describe but the Z1 feels kinda thick and bulky. The 5 I feels nicer honestly. That being said XZ1 still is my #1 in terms of Hand feel.

The XZ2 feels the worst sadly. I hate the odd shape and I sometimes get cramps typing. But thats an issue with the entire XZ2 and XZ3 Line. Thank god they went away with that odd shape in future Sony phones

Z5 Compact is also very nice, but I couldn't find it atm to fit in the shot.

  • The flashdrive in case was a random merchandise gift thing. It worked previously and was just the first one in the drawer.

But yeah in the future I will defintly get something better.

Also I did learn how to directly read and write Chips on the mainboard so the time spent wasn't totally wasted.

  • Its way taller yes, but not much wider and waaay slimmer. I have both and in the hand the 5 almost feels smaller.

That being said, the 21:9 Aspect ratio makes certain things annoying to use, especially Apps that place UI elemts on the top.
