  • Demands? What a collaborative and productive attitude that will surely build bridges and cooperation! You don't even have the leverage to make demands. This loaded gun is pointed at both of you, and one side taking that as an opportunity to make demands is just scummy, to be honest. The Biden administration has not been some kind of progressive revolution, but it would be foolish to suggest that he has not compromised with the left.

  • I read the article expecting an interesting discussion on large game updates, thinking of something like No Man's Sky, but this feels more like a gamer being upset about some patch notes. The changes they mention are... some removed letters and making one character easier to include in a non-evil playthrough? Forgive me if I'm not exactly panicking about the product here.

There is a core point to the argument that has merit. Developers should listen to their audience, but also use their skills and expertise to develop a balanced, fun game and not just implement whatever nonsense the audience demands. Games should be distributed in a way that supports older releases on demand. This article ain't it though.

  • Yeah I'd be less worried about internal pressures (which should be minimal at a halfway decently run org) and more about the externals. I don't think you would actually end up dealing with anything, but I'd know those reliant huge corps are pissed.

Man, your on-call situation sounds rad! I was salaried and just traded off on-call shifts with my team members, no extra time off. Luckily though, our systems were pretty quiet so it hardly ever amounted to much.

  • Then criticize them then and have them stay on topic, and I'll be right there with ya. Right now though, they're not using it as a bludgeon. It's just a nice win. Do you not see how your approach will lead to nothing but cynicism over time? Even if you strive not to, you will begin to view every win as some sort of maneuver to get one over on you.

  • I've been an SRE for a few large corps, so I've definitely played this game. I'm with you that it was likely just the FB identity or ad provider causing most of these issues. So glad I'm out of that role now and back to DevOps, where I'm no longer on call.

  • Disappointed in the comments here so far. There's a cardinal rule of improv that also works well for many other things in life, politics included: "yes, and".

This is a great change that will save folks money and make the country just a little bit fairer. Celebrate that, and then use the momentum to push for more. This builds alliances and a shared vision, instead of devolving into petty squabbles around direction.

  • Looking at the downmeter shot someone posted above, it's half the SREs in the country. Not sure what the root cause will be, but damn that's a lot of money down the tubes. I would not want to be the person who cost Meta and Google their precious thirty 9's of availability lol.

  • This will be contentious maybe, but I don't think the supreme court should ever care about consequences. They are interpreters. In the theoretical framework of our government, the consequences were considered and locked in by the legislature and it's up to the executive to use discretion in enforcement.

However, all that being said, the consequences for this would have sucked so hard. Every single election season, wall to wall coverage of court cases in all 50 states trying to toss candidates. Judiciary gets juiced even more than it already is, and judicial takeover becomes even more political than it already is. The presidential election hardly matters when the judiciary has become your new honorary electoral college.

  • This applies to every line item in the constitution. The federal government can fail to do their duty on practically anything. It doesn't mean the Court is now obligated to change the reading to make it effective in a different way just because one of the other branches is inept/corrupted. I agree with you though, the insurrection clause is practically worthless in this era.

Funnily enough, it's hard to see how the framers of the amendment didn't foresee a second Confederacy-like being incentivized to work to corrupt from within to break all these new tools. Then again, it's hard to come up with a scheme that truly blocks the possibility of an uprising this large without trampling on freedoms or causing disastrous consequences. (As much as I want trump gone, I really didn't want the future where every election season was watching court cases by sleazy lawyers in all 50 states, shifting even more power to the judiciary)

  • Almost as if the balance of federalism is a central topic to almost every amendment and the core of the constitution itself... You're not making a "gotcha" here.

Edit: kinda fucked to ninja edit your comments to say something different and much more inflammatory, but cool.

  • I mean, I'm with you that omitting context on this developing situation is inappropriate, but that's not what we were discussing. You're right, the statement is disputed, but it is a fact that it is the statement they have made. Journalists have a responsibility to report the facts to you, and that's what we currently have from one of the major parties involved. And your last take regarding disputed statements not being covered just makes no sense. Literally all political coverage would be unethical under that framework. I have a right to know the batshit insane things powerful people are saying and it's up to me to draw my own conclusions from the facts and perspectives provided.

  • HIPAA doesn't protect you from the government legally obtaining records. It's a shield for patients against having their medical data leaked to the public in various ways. This situation is beyond terrifying, but HIPAA doesn't apply here.

  • How is quoting someone/thing "uncritically accepting their narrative"? They're telling you what Israel said. It's up to you to believe it or not, but it's journalistic malpractice to just not report the alleged justification from one of the parties involved. What are you asking for, exactly?

  • You made me look! It looks like the younger demographics (under 30) were about evenly split on favorable/disfavorable views of both capitalism and socialism in 2022. Pew Research Link

It skews more toward capitalism for each older age bracket, which makes intuitive sense. Regardless, some interesting stats in there.
