Ha! Your issue may have been related to a Lemmy.world outage. There shouldn't be any reason why folks can't subscribe and join. Others are getting in. Please try again and report back. :)

Kudos to the devs! This looks like it could be the client I stick with long term if bugs are addressed and features get added in the coming weeks/months. It's probably down to this or Voyager. The neon alternate icon is 🔥!
