  • They "think" that, but it's definitely not the case.

Apart from the obvious vendor lock-in, their solutions were never the better approach from a technical or usability standpoint. Snaps aren't that great, their Wayland competitor wasn't particularly good, Unity was divisive. So they put tons of work into bad solutions for problems that have been solved elsewhere and better. Not the smartest business move.

  • Well, first of all, that term has been coined by Max Weber, who wrote that at least in part about Germany as well.

Anyway, the behavior you described is also kind of self inflicted pain. Developers simply don't have much room to grow, unless you want to get into management, and there are countless cushy, well paying, but somewhat boring jobs where you can just coast along doing 40h. And that's perfectly fine. But for some reason, Americans seem to be unable to get out of their total competition mindset and absolutely need to grind all the time and especially need to talk about how they are grinding.

  • Based on my own experience (albeit in Germany) that's all too often a problem we create ourselves. Devs don't like to be late or seem bad, so they'll take deadlines seriously, even though deadlines are almost always made up and irrelevant.

This is of course not helped by the fact that most of us actually like what we do. Last week I closed my work laptop where I wrote a deployment pipeline, and opened my own laptop - to write a deployment pipeline.

  • I'd argue, that also depends on the kind of person.

Often, there are news about some actor dying who had his prime back in the 70s/80s and didn't get much publicity afterwards. Hardly anybody knows how that person looks today. So I think an old photo would be fine.

  • I mean, if they're dramatically cheaper, they don't have to be efficient.

That being said, solar cells get around 20% efficiency, steam generators maybe 50% on a good day, subtract the reflection, collection and storage inefficiencies and you might get roughly in the same ballpark as solar cells.

  • Why not, though?

On a serious note: that's exactly what we're doing with lighters. At least some of them use piezo elements and not the sparkly wheel thingy to ignite the gas. And it's real fun to zap yourself with it.

  • Wasn't the main appeal of the mirror installations that you can store the heat somewhat efficiently? Rooftop solar is cost effective even here in Germany, where darkness and shadows loom around every corner.

  • Paying 420€ per month at most for comprehensive healthcare and 49€ per month for regional/urban public transportation nationwide is really a chore.

And additionally, I even have to live with the burden of getting my master's degree almost for free! It's horrible over here! I can barely enjoy my 30 vacation days thinking about the situation!

  • I'm just playing around with it on my home server, and yes, it does get annoying sometimes.

The whole system is far from being perfect, but I'm hoping for a mixture of learning on my side and improvements on the system's side.

  • I'm trying to justify that in my head, but the only idea that I have is that "old" hard drives couldn't handle the vibrations of a train. But flash existed even back then, and floppies aren't exactly known for their high capacity.

  • I think you don't understand. It's not about "physically reached the machine under the desk" it's "was processed correctly by a system". Operations can only tell if a technical error occurred, they have no idea what the data is supposed to look like. So dataport can do jack shit.

IT de facto already is outsourced, there's hardly any internal IT left, simply because the pay is shit. I'd get at least 1k less after taxes if I'd do the same work for the agency, not a contractor.

And if you think his joke is funny in this context, it's not. I work with these agencies everyday. They are structurally broken, but most people there are really passionate about what they're doing.

  • I lived with seagulls in my backyard for over ten years. I'm perfectly fine with a gullocide.

But more to the point: it also depends on the exact species. Here in Germany there are relatively small seagulls that don't make much noise and are relatively benign. And then there are these air chonkers that have a wingspan of almost two meters and scream around for no reason at all. Also, they love to completely disintegrate every trash bag or open dumpster.
