  • Coincidentally I just started to do so last night. Looking forward to these episodes.

  • Interesting and very helpful framing. I suppose it's been at the back of my mind but to call out power explicitly and analyze through that lens does indeed clear up quite a lot.

  • No we all got it about the same time. I misread your question.

I did get the notification. My bad

  • I want to downvote you so you get to have more bacon. Because...well ..bacon. 🥓

  • I've had a 2XL and a 4a. Both have been great. I'm debating whether to hold out for an 8 or save a few bucks like I did with the 4a and get a used 7 or something.

  • Can we not with the ableist slurs?

  • True. But you also found out they were lies, so...

  • Yup. During a meeting. That was ...fun

  • Naw. Everything ended earlier today. This is the afterlife. Most of us are still figuring it all out.

  • I love how these Rabid Right™ fucksticks rant about the "radical left" and then basically list things that amount to not being a total fucking asshole.

Regressivism is sick and twisted, and I really wished humanity didn't consist of quite so many of these fucked up people.

  • I mean this is an old article (2015) but up until 7 mo ago when he entered hospice care he was continuing to do good left and right it seems like.

I feel like he is one of the few politicians that wasn't a corrupt asshole. We need more like that at all levels of government to walk back all the corruption. Hard to get a critical mass of non corrupt jerks though. The greedy sociopaths are drawn to political office like moths to flame.

    PS: happy bday JC

  • Indeed. Unfortunately the tendency is for restrained capitalist systems to inch toward unrestrained oligopoly through greed leading to corruption and regulatory capture, absent eternal, aggressive vigilance.

It isn't hard to see that the goal of profit maximization is incompatible with the goals for healthcare, food, housing, prison systems. And is also at odds with preserving the environment.

  • It's not that simple. Several factors come into play.

The biggest systemic issues are the first past the post voting system and the electoral college (for president).

People who have even a simplistic understanding of how the system works and the track record for third parties know the odds are low. Those who are pragmatic will vote for Dem or Rep. In the current polarized political climate people are less likely to take a chance with a third party vote.

Also, the press mostly ignores candidates of other parties. So they aren't as well known and thus can't get popular enough to get traction.

If you really want more parties to have a chance, push for alternate voting systems like ranked choice, cumulative, etc.

This chart from fairvote.org compares a number of different systems based on their research.

  • Once again for the folks in the back...

A vengeance-based prison system is immoral to the point of being evil, and a sign of barbarism in the person advocating for it.

Without rehabilitation and lower recidivism it only makes things worse not better for society. More and better rehabilitation programs are needed. And we need to do a far, far better job of addressing poverty and child abuse.

Also, privatized prisons stand in the way of achieving the greater good here. Sort of like privatized healthcare and health insurance.
