  • The blog post noted that the new Europe-based nonprofit entity will wholly own the Mastodon GmbH for-profit entity. The organization is in the process of finalizing the place where the new entity will be set up.

could this be cause for concern down the line? i mean this as a genuine question. i don’t really know how these things work. my understanding is some weird non-profit and profit mixture is what led to problems at openAI. but that said, i also know that the people at the company make a difference, and sam altman is very likely much worse than the mastodon CEO. anyways, it would be nice to know more about this relationship between the profit and non profit side of things.

  • the wording of that announcement evokes a similar feeling to how i write things when im nearing the end of a project, experiencing extreme crunch, and begging for the sweet release of the deadline finally approaching. i’m in a trance like state during those times, barely conscious, barely coherent, just doing what i need to in order to reach tomorrow.

i can imagine there are a lot of people at ubisoft right now experiencing something similar. do not mistake this for empathy. i don’t know what im saying.

  • this could be the most insane path to class consciousness imaginable. it would be incredible if all of elon musks political projects end up culminating in the working class developing class solidarity and mobilizing against the ruling class. especially when he could have just done nothing and still been a hundred billionaire.

  • this is just like what mark zuckerberg said about all of europe having “too much censorship” and “making innovation impossible”. but i guess if germany really cared about being unbiased they would have moved all their institutions to texas by now or something.

  • this is a false dichotomy. in this context, i don’t think there’s much benefit to mollycoddling, and i don’t think there’s much benefit to open hostility. i was simply trying to ask why you chose to reply in such a hostile tone.

it’s also not clear to me how chainweasel is a genocide apologist. could you explain how you reached that conclusion?

  • the secret is that all spaces are actually euclidean, due to the whitney embedding theorem.

(not really though. i just wanted to take my turn at improperly stating famous math results on the internet.)

  • the explanation i received a long time ago in grade school was:

commas should be used when you want to combine a sentence with a sentence fragment (i.e. something that’s not a sentence); semicolons should be used when you want to combine a sentence with another sentence, provided both sentences are closely related to each other.

now, i’m sure the actual rule is probably more complicated and nuanced than that, but the above idea has served me well throughout my academic career. i’ve found it helpful for getting an intuition on when they should be used and why.
