I think our society is ducked up enough that economically it makes better sense to have a loyal audience of easy marks than a wide audience of fickle donors. Donald Trump figures this out years ago and has been cultivating/brainwashing that audience since.

Idk how to counter it except that maybe if we gave people cheaper/free essential goods (housing, school lunches etc) they'd be less inclined to go insane and support scammers like trump or the modern democratic party.

We should be going back on there and proselytizing (and on this end, welcoming new users with h links to documentation etc.) btw if you're new I recommend checking out the various mobile clients. I personally use lemmy sync because of muscle memory from years of using it on reddit, but there's a number of open source ones too.

Yeah wholesome mom and pop businesses getting eaten by larger, more specialized and efficient corpos is not a flaw, it's an inherent feature of capitalism. A worker at a specialized firm can manage dozens of apartments for the same salary as your aunt managing just one or two- she stands no chance in the long run. Same for retail stores and most other kinds of businesses really.

The only solution is democracy- having the larger more efficient firm be democratically owned by its workers and accountable to them and through them the community, rather to a cigar chomping investor hundreds of miles away
