There’s a bit more info here under guest accounts.

Essentially you go to log in as normal and when it prompts for username and password, just press submit.

In voyager you can browse an instance as a guest by logging in without filling in username or password.

However if you turn on auto-hide posts, that helps. Because then the feed will essentially load to where you last scrolled to.

Thanks! I agree, it's a nice feature. I switched between light mode waiting in the sun at bus stop to dark mode once on the bus yesterday, that made me really appreciate it.
