Every single time Russia has announced a ceasefire since it became a nation in the 90s, that’s been so they can move their troops into better positions unhindered. Often it has been followed by a brutal attack that cares nothing about civilian or Russian casualties.
If Quebec seceded, they would have no currency, no military, and no protection from the world’s superpowers. France thinks they’ve already deviated too far from French culture.
There’s zero benefit to the province if they secede. They’d likely cease to be a distinct culture within 50 years.
It would also be a loss to Canada, especially the francophone parts outside Quebec, but also everywhere else. Quebec keeps the country balanced.
I think in this case it’s like global warming; the “it’s gone too far to go back now” point has long passed, but it’s still possible to prevent potential unchecked snowballing harm.
Trump has been doing the “throw everything at the wall and see what sticks” thing so that others have to scramble to keep up.
If the courts start jailing everyone who follows his orders, someone has to fill out all that paperwork to get them released again. Meanwhile, those people go to jail too.
First off, I’m Canadian, and yeah, you’ve pissed us off.
Secondly, read the lnk I linked; before Trump did this whole trade war thing, there was already almost a decade of work going into rebuilding the knowhow and supply chains needed. It takes time, but there are already companies who have been ramping up over the past 5-10 years — they just haven’t been able to compete with China on price or quality.
But now they’ll get their chance, as the US is running out of other options.
Meanwhile, the rest of us will hopefully also wean ourselves off of Chinese rare earths too, now that we’ve seen them actually weaponize them against the US.
Then again, rare earths processing is very environmentally destructive; there’s a reason China is doing it in Jilin and Mongolia.
Sir Pratchett was a genius. He will continue to be missed.
Also worth reading the books he co-wrote with Stephen Baxter.
