  • I'd pay off all of my family's debt and secure them financially for life. Then I'd start a truly universal housing project in my city and state.

  • I guess that it is possible as our society becomes increasingly authoritarian. This is why I'm following Fair Phone. It's a pure Linux phone that's slated to become available this year or so I remember reading.

  • I've yet to play with FT8. I've had to sell my radio equipment when I became disabled. One day, I'll get back into it again.

  • From a technology stand point this is intriguing. But that much said, I am anti-capitalist. The one downside to HF radio is that the available bandwidth is tiny. You'd have to create a compression algorith capable of compressing enough data to complete a trade. Also HF is very susceptible to changing atmospheric conditions. I am a licensed ham radio operator.

  • Leela is looking every bit the queen!

  • Very nice! Glad to see you're making use of it. I've never been really interested in Instagram so Pixelfed won't be something I'll use but I've got a hankering to try Friendica! I miss some of the good sides of Facebook.

  • Optimism and hope are in short supply overall but I am excited about riding this wave of bringing the internet back to its original decentralized roots and goals. The internet was never intended to be dominated by 5 or 6 mega corporations

  • I personally am a fan of DIY when it comes to VPN. Check out Nebula. I'm working on building a Nebula-based network. Right now I'm using WireGuard tunnels. Pure WireGuard is diificult to scale but it does operate well scaled up.

  • +1 for Tailscale because it uses the WireGuard protocol. Tailscale just adds additional features on top of the WireGuard base. That much said, I am more interested in Slack's Nebula project because it is completely open source. I like the approach Nebula is taking towards mesh networking. I'm just still struggling to get it working.

  • That's the entire problem with those knock-offs: almost no quality control. So it can be very hit or miss. Bottom line is that if you care about your data, you'll back it up! 😉

  • You will be hard-pressed to find a home on the #fediverse as somebody who is conservative. That's just a simple fact. The fediverse is generally a home for those that reject capitalism and have gone hard to the left. The reason for this is because corporate social media banned and censored people that share my viewpoints. This is most likely why you aren't getting the reception that you hoped for

That much said the protocol that makes the fediverse work, ActivityPub, is completely standard and free to use and adopt. There is nothing other than time preventing you from studying it and deriving an implementation that will put you in touch with people that share your values.

  • When I am asked what neoliberalism is, I always answer that it is somebody that falls into one or more of these categories:

    • People that claim they're fiscally conservative but socially liberal
    • People that loudly proclaim to care about the poor and working classes but only in front of crowds that can help their popularity.
    • People that advocate openly for heavily means-tested social welfare so as to have the appearance of it.
    • People that cherry pick their societal values and do not stick to them.

Sometimes an example is in order. Sadly, Oprah Winfrey is the epitome of what encapsulates neoliberalism. It's simply performing for a crowd, preaching help to the poor/working classes, but doing, at worst the opposite, and at best having only a token system.

  • They have my total solidarity and support. May they get everything they ask for!

  • That's interesting because Kingston's usually have a reputation that proceeds them. I currently have some cheap Chinese knock-off SSD that I've put through hell and it keeps plugging away.

  • Blocking is the way. Not only will the bot not appear on your followers list, it won't be able to get any post that you put out. I would recommend locking down the ability of people to follow you, because unlike Twitter, the fediverse isn't a popularity contest and it really doesn't matter if you have a ton of followers or only a few. Go to Preferences->Appearance and click the check box marked "Require follow requests."

  • I think I get what you're trying to say here that if you even slightly and respectfully disagree then you're banned. That's not so much a feature of Mastodon as a bug of humanity. I like to refer to it as a range of tolerance. I have a really broad range. But I have no tolerance for hatred, racism, and bigotry. There is no valid argument putting these subjects in a positive light - zero. zip. nada. There is no alternative conversation to be had where these could be remotely beneficial. I can understand and tolerate different likes and dislikes without getting impassioned. But if you attack me or my principles, I won't even glorify you with a response. It will be an instant block and I will wash my hands of it.

If you @Milk_SDF_Possum@lemmy.sdf.org are generally a follower of the conservative end of the political spectrum, that is every bit your right as it is my right not to have to be subjected to that morass of hate. I am sure there are instances that federate solely around conservative values if that is what you seek out.

  • She's beautiful and I love her name! 😽

  • Although cats are masters at hiding pain and discomfort, I believe she will be just fine and the vet will pronounce her in good health!

  • Ach! You're correct. My memory failed me. I thought The Grudge was a remake of Ju-On and I forgot who directed Ju-On. I see that it is now a Netflix series. Might have to check it out. Ju-On

  • HAHAHAHA! I never thought about it that way but it would totally work. 😆
