claiming the trillion-dollar company had blatantly refused to address fraudulent content on its site
Probably dropped the suit because that's obviously bullshit.
The fact is Meta has human review teams that check millions of posts every day and a large number of those are removed. You can certainly argue over wether or not they're deleting the right posts, but the idea that they "refuse to address fraudulent content" is honestly ridiculous.
The second issue is Forest is campaigning for law reforms around this issue. Go ahead and do that, but the courts want nothing to do with that. They interpret existing laws, they have zero involvement in writing new ones.
Once again this is not a Rust vulnerability.
This is a Windows vulnerability and Rust is simply the first set of tools to implement a workaround - since Microsoft can't do it without breaking backwards compatibility.
Somehow the narrative has turned into negative PR for Rust when in fact they are handling this vulnerability better than anyone else in the industry.
Isn’t China best buds with Russia?
Not really. More of an "enemy of my enemy is my friend" situation.
But Ukraine isn't an enemy of China - and from the beginning China has carefully walked thin line of refusing to support Russia while also refusing to publicly acknowledge that Russia is doing anything wrong. They've repeatedly offered to be involved in peace talks... but that's not really possible as long as Russia's idea of "peace" is more like "total surrender".
Can't get the site to load, but I gather they're talking about the Skydio X10 drone?
That doesn't seem like the type of drone you'd want on an active battlefield. A war drone should be like an AK47. Simple reliable and cheap.
You don't need a $15,000 drone to tell you there's a T-90 tank waiting for you around the next corner. Some of the simple drones Ukraine has are just a circuit board with four propellers a battery and a cheap phone camera directly attached to the board. When (not if) it's shot down, grab another one.
I’m mystified how it’s any different than downloading off someone’s server
A huge difference is you actually are downloading off someone's server - unlike torrents where you're actively participating in the distribution of pirated material. If you ever do end up on the wrong end of a copyright case.. that difference will be important.
As do I Dr. Ward, with ever election result reinforcing the deveststation of the orthodoxy and the disregard my fellow citizens have for a livable biosphere.
This is a fight we will win, eventually, and we should never give up or back down because that would delay our eventual victory. The primary enemy is idiots who don't even believe climate change is real but as the world crumbles around them they'll eventually acknowledge that mistake (it will be easier, by the way, for them to acknowledge their mistake if we try to be welcoming rather than ostracising those people).
We also don't need everyone on our side. Just half of the population, and we're pretty close to that number.
Can we win every battle? No. There will be losses and the reef could be one of them. But we have to win the war. There's no other option.
eat healthy, have a job, go to the gym, hang out with friends
- Cook a healthy meal and share it with other people. Meals are a perfect time to socialise. I met my partner at a Christmas lunch a decade ago for example.
- Find a job where you interact with other people, avoid jobs where you sit in a home office all day by yourself.
- Personally I think gyms are terrible. Some sort of sport (even just group running) is more fun, a better workout because competition will drive you to work harder, and you will meet new people.
- Don't just hang out with friends. Encourage everyone in your social circle to invite new people into the group. Most of them won't be a perfect fit and will naturally orbit out, but a few will stick.
For edge cases where you need the power of a programming language in your config system, use something like PKL.
The verge has also covered it - no paywall: https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/9/24124179/beeper-app-automattic-acquisition-matrix-messaging
You can. Beeper supports Matrix and IRC.
I guess if you spend all your time working with a laptop on a kitchen counter, this product can with that.
... but WTF are you doing working on a kitchen counter? Get yourself a proper desk. Seriously. And if you've got a proper desk two or three large displays will provide better pixel density and a more comfortable work environment for a lot less money.
I can get behind using it for mediation, gaming, watching videos, etc... but no way am I going to spend this kinda money on any of those use cases. I look forward to a future version that is an order of magnitude cheaper.
The thing is, a competent teacher knows exactly what score every student will get before they even hand out the tests.
If you do slightly better than expected, they'll congratulate you. But if you blow it out of the park then they know you were cheating.
Ultimately it doesn't matter at all - because a teacher's job isn't to mark your test. Their job is to teach you. And if you get to the test without knowing any of the answers... then that's the real problem. Wether or not you cheat on the test is irrelevant.
am I a boomer for being offended any time someone sends me AI-written garbage?
Yes.
But also — why are you doing them any courtesies? Clearly the other person hasn't spent any time on the email they sent you. Don't waste time with a response - just archive the email and move on with your life.
Large Language Models are extremely powerful tools that can be used to enhance almost anything - including garbage but it can also enhance quality work. My advice is don't waste your time with people producing garbage, but be open and willing to work with anyone who uses AI to help them write quality content.
For example if someone doesn't speak english as a first language, an LLM can really help them out by highlighting grammatical errors or unclear sentences. You should encourage people to use AI for things like that.
I get where you're coming from, and I understand what the artist was trying to do.
But for me allowing this to go all the way to a courtroom was crossing a line. The judge and everyone else working there have important shit to do, including cases where people's actual lives are being ruined by discrimination, and they shouldn't have to waste time participating in anything like this.
There's a time and a place for artwork and protests. A courtroom is not one of them.
Also, I think it was counterproductive. If you want misogynist dickheads to change their ways, you don't do it by overcorrecting too far in the other direction. This has just made them even more passionate and even less likely to treat women fairly
There's also the massive general exemption of wether or not your actions are discriminatory.
For example, it's perfectly legitimate to reject an actor who's gender doesn't match the character they are being hired to perform. That is not discriminatory. It's only discrimination if there's no valid reason to reject someone based on gender.
The court ruled, in this case, that there was no valid reason to prevent men from viewing picaso/etc's artwork. "We want to make a point" is not good enough.
I’m not a lawyer, but from what I’ve read, I think if they were to do the paperwork to set up the room as a women-only club somehow, they’d be in the clear.
I'm not a lawyer either, but I don't think the law works like that. Nuance matters in legal proceedings, and finding a loophole like that might reduce your damages but it won't prevent you from losing the case. When two pieces of legislation disagree (e.g. no discrimination vs allowing women-only clubs), it's basically up to the judge to decide which one has priority and they're likely to choose the one that's most important. Which would be the anti-discrimination law, not the club law. The world is full of contradicting laws - judges deal with this stuff every day all day and cases where the law is clear generally don't go to court at all.
X is just a BAAAAAAD brand
So - a perfectly accurate name for the company then.
Intel is not fine on servers - ARM servers are about 20% faster for outright performance and 40% faster for performance-per-dollar. Since it's literally just selecting a different option in a dropdown menu (assuming your software runs well on ARM, which it probably does these days), why would anyone choose Intel on a server?
And they're not fine no a laptops either - unplugged my ARM Mac from the charger seven hours ago... and I'm at 80% charge right now. Try that with an Intel laptop with an i9 Processor and a discrete NVIDIA GPU (those two would be needed to have similar performance).
They're only really doing well on desktop PCs, which is a small market, and people who can't be bothered changing to a new architecture — a big market but one that is going away.
Microsoft will never beat apple when in comes to how well their system runs on ARM hardware
I dunno - cellular networking, touch screen, detachable keyboard... Apple is pretty easy to beat if you ask me. All Microsoft needs is an ARM chip that is "fast enough" and also has competitive battery life. Something Intel can't deliver on.
Windows on ARM will not be used by anyone unless AAA games or AutoCAD software is build for ARM
That's not how the transition went on a Mac. Software compiled for Intel is generally faster on ARM than it ever was on Intel Macs... not because the CPU is faster (it's not), but rather Apple Silicon Macs have faster SSDs, faster RAM, more L2/L3 cache, etc. Those aren't proprietary secrets, they're just expensive. Anyone can do the same. Intel has caught up but only on their expensive desktop processors. If Qualcomm can do it on with a reasonably priced laptop chipset, that could be pretty special.
Games aren't limited by compute performance, they're mostly limited by how fast textures can be read. And it's the same with AutoCAD.
Also you missed a massive use case - browsing the web. Chrome/etc is already optimised for ARM, since nobody uses x86 on a smartphone.
The convenience comes from leaving your wallet at home. Also, a lost card is a major problem. A lost phone is fine, nobody can do anything with it unless they know your PIN and you can locate it through cell network/bluetooth tracking.
There's not that much fuss with my phone - double tap the side button, look at it to pass a face recognition check, then wave it over the chip reader.
I guarantee the same content was posted on the fediverse.
Not defending X, but going elsewhere won't protect us from disinformation and the open nature of this network means we have to be especially careful.
