  • If there ever was a time for anti snitch culture to actually make a comeback...

  • Because you remember it better when you actually write it out instead of just using a keyboard. And you can draw diagrams with ease. Most styluses are inaccurate and one dimensional, and buying a phone with actual proper stylus support in both the display and stylus itself is expensive. You could buy a separate technical device just for note taking with proper stylus support and have it upload notes to the cloud so you can access it at all times, but that requires a constant internet connection and mobile data is expensive. And then you have to carry this seperate device with you in the same way you'd carry a much cheaper physical notepad anyways.

  • Texting is expensive and mobile data for Whatsapp messages is much cheaper, even though mobile data prices are still outrageous.

In South Africa 1 SMS costs 50 cents on standard rates, and 25 cents on bundle rates. For one message. There are 100 cents in one Rand obviously. 1GB of data is around 80 Rand. If one WhatsApp text message is 30kb, 1GB of mobile data gets you over 30 000 WhatsApp texts. Meanwhile that same 80 Rand only gets you around 300 SMS's on bundle rates.

  • Hexbear was defederated from Lemmy dot world before we even enabled federation from our side. We've literally never been able to post there.

  • People still play TF2?

  • The people rule so effectively in the USA that the candidate with less votes has won 1/3 of presidential elections in the 21st century.

How can you be a "democracy" if the candidate with the most votes loses the election? I thought that was the number one rule of democracy, the person with the most votes wins.

  • I honestly hate these apps but have no choice but to use them. Shit sucks.

  • Maybe this is a good reason not to start drinking again lol.

  • It's almost impossible not to have a unique fingerprint online with how stuff is tracked. Websites are tracking user agents, screen resolution, your GPU/web graphics renderer, etc.

The only way is to disable JavaScript, but good luck to using the internet without it

  • Obviously. Device fingerprinting is much, much more advanced than that. IP, device screen resolution and type, etc. And that's just the basics

  • YouTube revanced everyone. YouTube revanced.

Or newpipe if you don't want a Google account

  • I wish. It's completely replaced text messaging in a lot of countries, it's not going away anytime soon

  • Yeah we have this in South Africa and now some of the "rangers" as you say, are campaigning to sell rhino horn themselves to flood and devalue the market. They say it's all obtained ethically and all, or captured from the poachers, but I have my doubts.

  • I'm sorry about that happening. I think a lot of hexbear users just comment on every instance as if they're on hexbear, which has a very unique culture that will definitely seem extremely weird to outsiders. I remember first joining the site after subreddit bans and getting into some arguments over that.

I have been trying to tell other users (I'm just a normal user myself) to beware when they are on other instances and to tone down the "trolling" and similar antics. I hope the new rules around federation, as well as an upcoming emote scaling fix, can facilitate that.

Wish your instance (and other instances we are federated with) the best of luck on the fediverse.

  • Yeah I mean the kids are being light hearted, the boomers are obviously seriously mad lol.

It's probably a local thing with chat apps like WhatsApp fully replacing text messaging over here

  • Nah that definitely happens. I see plenty of 🤣🤣🤣, 😂😂😂, and 😭😭😭 daily. And the cat versions like 😹. Sometimes all of them together. Some of it to hide something they're obviously mad about. But it's all light hearted, it's never like a serious thing.

  • That's actually a boomer opinion, plenty of zoomers send messages full of emotes over text or whatsapp, like this 😁

I know because I'm in my mid 20s and pretty much everyone does that. Maybe a South African thing? I don't know
