  • If they could make them small / sensitive enough to make them subdermal, without the risky brainsurgery, that would be an absolute gamechanger and would increase acceptance by a lot. if the process would be like getting a few piercings under local anesthesia, it would make servicing the hardware much less of a life and death decision, and i wouldn't mind getting something like that - especially if it's on the hackability scale of a steam deck lol

  • I'm shedding tears for all the people who are working hard on their education who lose so much because of the tantrum of a manchild.

  • I've set up my SO with adfree alternative clients for Youtube 3 times now, and she always defaults back to the adinfested youtube app - and she's at least a competent user. i cannot wrap my head around it, but it's her time and attention she's wasting, not mine.

  • Dead Island 2 is free on Epic currently, and probably more fun than Borderlands 4; BL 3 wasn't written well, and i assume the same for BL 4. A shame, BL2 is one of my most played FPS

  • It's also expensive and very shortlived, so it has at least that going for it. Source: found out my passport had expired 24 hours before boarding a flight; Also, austrian temp passports are also white

  • especially in the context of foodstuffs the decagramm (or just deka in common language) is getting used in Austria, don't know if it's the same in germany, so it would be a 25 deka burger

  • At my last workspace listening in on the call recordings (which were binding agreements with clients) was only allowed with the employee giving the ok and no way to force it, with a strong union support preventing retaliation against employees.

Since they were very open about this, it wasn't needed often - mostly when clients made complaints differing from what was logged by the employee.

    Honorable Mentions:

    • ΔV: Rings of Saturn
    • We Who Are About To Die
  • Max Schrems and his team have done a lot of good regarding user rights in the face of giants like meta. I'm pretty sure that at least a handful of Meta employees regulary have nightmares because of NOYB.

  • I agree, locally hosted AI tools for image or text generation don't use lots of power, only do what a user wants and not what a corp wants, and are a valid hobby or working tool. It's sad that so many people are blinded by their hate towards corporate AI and don't differentiate.

I am a terrible artist, but if i need a quick picture for a presentation or just a new desktop background, i sure as shit would never commission something but would just go without if there's nothing with a CC license that fits. Today i have the possibility to get exactly what i want, and not one byte gets transferred outside of my home network, There is no lost sale for any artists, and i still have something that is aesthetically pleasing.

Same with chatbots - i mainly use them as a quick reference for commands when i don't want to read 15 screens worth of man pages or when i am again stuck creating a RegEx.

  • calm down man, there is an invisible and pretty large mole hill in the middle.

  • thanks, that was nice to experience, made me install slay the princess again to finally do the deed

  • Dude, my Steam Link and Steam Controllers are still in active use and get updates to this day. I even have 2 backup Steam Links - at the end they were selling them at 5€ per piece, and since i use it to stream pretty much everything to my TV, i got some in reserve.

I'm still on the first one, and one of the Controllers is now working with my Steam Deck out of the box.

I agree (a bit) on the Steam machines, those were pretty much a flop when seen as isolated device - but they laid the groundwork for the Deck.

  • i can at least tell you that the mood swings do get less the older you get. My 20s were by far the worst phase, the 30 started to get better and in my 40s i "mellowed out", but it still hits me a few weeks per year.

If you have those thoughts without much of a break, i would really recommend getting a solid diagnosis (personality disorders? add/adhd?) and have a hard look at the stress factors in your life and how to cut back on them, ideally with a seasoned therapist.

  • My personal experience (recurring major depression since childhood & cluster C personality disorder): Near complete drug & alcohol abstinence (i was a real pothead starting the day with a bong hit, and drunk at least once, but more often 2-3 times a week - selfmedicating gets pretty selfdestructive after a while), a lot of time and more therapy. Medication is a stopgap measure or to smoothen mood swings; what really helped me regarding my depression (and a lot with my other issues) was a therapy session per week for the last 4 years, 1 visit to the psychiatrist per month, and 2 group therapy sessions per week.

And time helps! The older you get, the less wild your mood swings get. Starting from my 30s i noted a distinct reduction in the extend of my depressive phases, and with my 40s i was able to cut back on a lot of my medication (i still take Duloxetin and Lyrica).

But for me it was mostly finding the right therapist and keeping at it with him (i have serious issues with developing relationships; it's far easier to "reset" things by not meeting people more than a few times) for years.

I am lucky that i am recognized by my social insurance system as not able to work, because i will never be stable enough to cope with the pressure of even a part time job for more than a few months before i am a mental wreck again. In the US i would probably be dead by now.

  • Extra cursed: I am currently testing Orbit, the LLM stuff Mozilla is offering where you can process stuff locally. This video transcript makes me unsure if i should keep it to laugh my ass off or uninstall it because it's a waste of system ressources:

"The speaker in the transcript references a song with the repeated phrase "Music" throughout. They express their familiarity with the people and settings in the song, using descriptive language such as "saucy places" and "sainted chief." The speaker also mentions feeling triggered and salty, and expresses difficulty in joining in when people are being excessive. They reminisce about their past, mentioning a churchy school environment and feeling dragged. The speaker also uses the phrase "glow up" to describe personal growth, and again mentions the difficulty in keeping up with those who are "extra." The speaker also references the song's location and the concept of a "made world." Overall, the speaker is expressing their connection to and thoughts on a particular song and its lyrics."

  • I disagree on the premise that a rock cannot be used for much. I mean, the available actions for a rock ARE pretty limited, but it can be used in a variety of ways!
