  • Technofascism on its way to legalize my 30TB trove of backups

  • I worked tech support for an ISP, and i did this more often than i want to think about it.

It didn't help that one of the cable modems we gave out to our clients had a standby-button, which made the CM look like it was off - there was no indicator at all on the device, so i couldn't even blame the client for that (but i did blame my employer for not thinking about that. just like i blamed him for buying another modem series with power sockets which failed pretty quickly. did i mention that repairs were done in-house, and not all too well? it's been 20 years, and i am still a bit salty for all my wasted time)

  • had that under linux too, because there's still buffer to be written; but under linux i can at least check /proc/sys/vm/dirty_bytes to see how long it will take.

  • TIL a full circle on lemmy is about 14 months

  • wanted to say the same, that behavior just screams loss of inhibition because of frontal brain matter loss a.k.a. dementia

  • That's my experience too. Heroic looks nicer, but functionalitywise Lutris is far ahead, having support for EA's and Ubisofts launcher as well. It's also a lot more stable than Heroic.

  • i love your posts sooo much, please do not ever stop posting!

  • This is really really disgusting, thanks for sharing; i know who to send this information for some laughs.

    I don't think it's a bannable offense tho

  • i actually made an account a few weeks back just to take a look at it

  • The Alameda County Coroner's Bureau said driver Soren Dixon, 19, and passengers Jack Nelson, 20, and Krysta Tsukahara, 19, suffocated from smoke inhalation. Burns contributed to the deaths, the bureau said.

  • there may also be the possibility of the dev simply not wanting to define his views publicly out of the blue, because regardless of stance, you will make enemies, potentially hindering the projects development or facing personal repercussions.

It should be allowed for someone to not out themselves as either transphobic or an ally. If the person does have issues with pronouns, it's better if they simply keep to themselves instead of loudly proclaiming it. The other way around it's the same - even if someone is pro trans, it might not be suitable for them to openly speak about it - it might even put them in danger.

I agree with you that this is often a dog whistle, but it might also be a poor choice of wording.

  • yeah, rare earths are a misnomer - they are not rare, they are not highly concentrated in one spot. if the price goes up, exploiting other deposits becomes worthwhile. damn, there is a deposit in Kärnten / Austria that is just not yet profitable to develop; thats an area where mining goes back centuries.

  • Bluesky will never be able to properly decentralize, since the costs are prohibitive and cannot be afforded by normal users. The shared heap concept used is currently somewhere around 10-15 TB storage, which is already pretty expensive to host for a single person, and that's only the STORAGE for a single host NOW - no redundancy, no backups, no traffic and no worldwide infrastructure to keep the response time down. That's a huge difference to a Mastodon instance, which can be run from a pretty cheap setup and is afforable for most people.

Also, the way Bluesky implements how user identities are handled makes account migration more a theoretical possibility than a believable "decentralization". Theoretically Bluesky gives a credible exit strategy, where the shared heap can be copied by another organisation in case of loss of user trust or bankruptcy of the company and everyone can just switch over and carry on without losing a single post, but there are a lot of big if's in that theory.

Here's the source, from Christine Lemmer-Webber who worked on ActivityPub: https://dustycloud.org/blog/how-decentralized-is-bluesky/

  • i am confused because this guy was in jail for this and somewhat impressed that he has the balls to pull the same stunt 2 times in a row.

  • my bet is that his system is infected with something redirecting him there, and the norton trash he is using instead of windows defender doesn't detect the infection, but the firewall blocks the connection to the site at least lol

  • literally how traditions work

  • One thing i agree on with you is that at most of the women i had sex with were pretty bad at verbalizing what they want in bed, regardless of when they are asked about it, and that's coming from an european where sex stuff is a lot less taboo to talk about than in the states. This is one thing that gets better with age, tho - older women seem to be much more vocal about their needs, so i would say experience is the key factor here. given how sexually repressive the US are especially towards women, it's something that only social reform can fix, and currently the US are making steps backwards instead of forwards in that regard.

Body shaming to hurt someone during a breakup is not ok and a character flaw; breakups hurt enough as it is without stuff like that. I'm happy i haven't experienced that yet; all my relationships so far have ended amicably, even if tears where involved on both sides - it just didn't work out anymore. There would probably be no issue if i met any of my previous partners again.

I do not agree that all sex is transactional. I know it isn't for me, i can be perfectly content with giving pleasure without receiving anything in return, and i believe most sex is cooperative, working together towards fullfillment of both parties. That includes a transaction, if you really want to be pedantic about it, but the transaction is pretty low-key.
