  • I'm gonna assume you're not from the US given your lemmy instance. In the US most police radios transmit "in the clear", i.e., not encrypted. As such, anyone can buy a "police scanner", or a radio on the same band as police/first-responder frequencies.

In the internet age, there's websites (and apparently apps now too), that physically monitor these radio channels and stream them online. Hence, a "police scanner app". Hope that helps.

Having typed all that out, the only thing I ask is to let us know where you're from, please.

  • Some thoughts:

    Ubuntu, most likely

I'd encourage you to take a look at Linux Mint, it alleviates some of the Ubuntu fuckiness. And if you want to join the "I use arch btw" crowd, maybe checkout EndeavourOS if you're feeling more brave than just Ubuntu variants (which is built on arch, but makes barrier to entry a little easier).

i9s are the latest hotness but don’t think the price is worth it

Take a look at last generation to soften the blow to your wallet. E.g., instead of looking at a 14900k, look at 13 or even 12 series. In fact, this is a useful strategy all around if you're being price conscious: go one gen older.

GPU that can support some sort of ML/AI with DisplayPort

Probably going to want to go with a discrete card, rather than just integrated. Other major consideration is going to be nvidia vs AMD, for which you'll need to decide if CUDA should be part of your calculus or not. I'll defer to any data science engineers that might wander through this post.

The rest of your reqs pretty much come as regular stock options when building a pc these days. Though another nicety for my latest builds, is multi-gig nics (though 2.5Gb was my ceiling, since you'll also need the network gear to utilize it). Going multi-gig is nice for pushing around a fuckton of data between machines on my lan (including a NAS).

Very last thing that I've found helpful in my last 3 builds spanning 15 years: I use newegg for its reviews of items, specifically so I can search for the term "linux" in any given product's reviews. Often times I can glean quick insight on how friendly (or not) hardware has been for other's linux builds.

And I lied, I just remembered about another linux hardware resource: https://linux-hardware.org/?view=search

You can see other people that have built with given hardware. Just remember to do a scan too once your build is up to pay it forward.

Good luck, and remember to have fun!

  • The key to being productive as a programmer is to have a great code editor

    True true.

The best code editor came from GitHub

    I'm out.

  • You gotta give this guy some credit, hear me out.

Even as rich as he is, he still finds the time every single two weeks to visit some po-dunk community, miles off the main highway, not even a Walmart within two hours, simply to find good ol' American salt of the Earth type people that don't even recognize him.

Once he arrives at that destination, it's not off to the most expensive kept-secret B&B, it's not off to the most expensive trail boss for exotic hunting, no no, it's to the cheapest fucking cost cutters barber that side of Oklabama to get that godawful Data-from-Star-Trek:TNG haircut.

Or at least I hope that's the story behind his hair, because there can be no other plausible reason for it.

  • Understood. But if the Trump apparatus has been undervaluing illegally, and this is the first time evidence of it is front and center, it might catch the attention of the taxman. And that's generally not attention most would want.

Sadly I think the IRS would wait till after the election to avoid the appearance of trying to sway things in favor of the current administration. And even after, only pursue legal action if Trump doesn't win. Fucking equal justice my ass.

  • I would have liked to see a lifetime ban

Three years could be, dude does not look healthy.

  • If all of this fuckery doesn't involve some element of back taxes to be collected, I'd be extemely surprised. And the back tax clamping is a fuck you pay me type clamping for sure.

  • I have seen it come back with a "Saved -2%" before... turns out there were html entities that were counted as only one character pre-summary, but the full 5-6 character codes were counted post.

Was funny to me especially since the bot was honest about it lol. Like if I were to code a similar bot in the future, I am def going to add a conditional and skip the post if compression is <= 0.

  • Aye, but a little more convoluted. TL;DR: Several new projects forked to avoid the enshitification, and with much time and drama, most of the actually active maintainers joined forces under the Tenacity name+repo. (And 4chan was part of the drama, because of course they were.)

  • It seems like if these Polish farmers get what they want in the short term, then they'll be so much worse off in the long term.

In regards to Ukraine: If Ukraine is not able to sell to the rest of Europe, then Ukraine is weakened, and more susceptible to being invaded by Russia. If Russia is successful in Ukraine, Poland is surely not too far from being invaded next. A Poland that's trying to fend off a Russian invasion is less likely to have a fruitful economy than in peacetime.

In regards to climate: If the climate is fucked, then ain't nobody growing/selling as many crops.

Both seem so shortsighted - am I missing something?

  • There’s no point in those interviews unless you say what needs to be said.

" Yeah great, well I generally come in at least 15 minutes late. I, uh, use the side door, that way Lumberg can't see me and, uh, after that I just sort a space out for about an hour. Yeah I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working. I do that for, uh, probably another hour after lunch too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about 15 minutes of real, actual, work. Oh yeah, let me tell you something about TPS reports. See the thing is Bob, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care. It's a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don't see another dime. So where's the motivation? And here's something else, Bob, I have eight different bosses right now. Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation, is not to be hassled. That and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that'll only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired. Listen, I'm going to go. Uh, it's been really nice talking to both of you guys. Good luck with your layoffs, all right? I hope your firings go really well."

  • every generation thinks they’re the last ans that everything is about to go to shit. In the end that never really happens

About 3.76% of the worlds population died due to WWII, or about 300MM people if scaled to today. For those people, the end really did happen.

With NATO being threatened by a malicious US presidential candidate, along with Putin getting express approval to go ape by the same, I'm actually quite worried WWIII is more possible than ever in my adult life (I was only a child during the cold war).

  • Do not use a black light in that room.
