  • Interesting, I didn't know that about Germany. I'll have to look into how that is working out for them, seeing as probably quite a lot of people my age and younger won't be able to afford to buy.

  • Either way, unless we can prove that our current understanding of physics is wrong, devastation at a universal scale could happen any time, anywhere.

This is a disingenuous way to phrase this. Our current understanding of physics leads us to hypothesize that our universe could be metastable, there is no proof that we actually exist in such a state.

  • Nothing happened because a lot of effort was put into changing vulnerable systems.

I am old enough to remember Y2K. The media definitely stirred some people up about it, in my experience most people seemed to not be too worried about it.

But we shouldn't dismiss the hard work that a lot of people did to upgrade or redesign systems that Y2K could have affected.

As a aside, I remember that when the clock struck midnight at the NYE party I was at someone flipped the circuit breaker for the house as a joke, turning out all the lights. I remember a few people gasping and wondering what the hell was going on for a few moments until the lights came back on and the prankster revealed himself. Was pretty funny at the time 🤣

  • I feel like I'm a late starter too, only now in my 30s do I have my shit together and have a good job. Definitely has helped mental health, I still am working out things but it's better. So glad I finished university and got a good degree.

  • "The vehicle I choose to drive puts me at greater risk of injury and death, regardless of who is at fault, so I'm going to drive in a manner that further increases my risk of injury or death."

    See how ridiculous that sounds?

  • Batteries are not quite there yet. It's still quite a large investment to build massive batteries that can help small to medium towns for short periods of time. As an EE I'm hoping we make a breakthrough soon that will allow us to increase their energy density. Either that or move to different liquid fuels, which have an energy density advantage.

  • Yes, I don't doubt that the totalitarian CCP took full advantage of the opportunity to grow their economy to what it is now. And they did that through state controlled capitalism and gross human rights violations.

I don't doubt they are smart, but the methods they have used, ie being a single party authoritarian state, are barbaric. It was a mistake to help China succeed as we did.

  • I agree that there is an unhealthy attitude to capital growth. That definitely needs to change.

As for the 39% of Americans not investing, how many have pension funds or other retirement schemes that do the investing for them? Regardless, they are free to choose what they do with their money. If they want to hold it, so be it.

A period of deflation might make for a good break, but not as a permanent solution. Investment inspires innovation, and innovation in new technologies will be vital in combating climate change.

I can't comment on the wars or Rome but I think there are multiple factors there, fiat maybe being one but of what significance?

  • I think dismissing an entire opposing view point as Nazis is one of the lowest forms of discourse there is, and unfortunately it's very pervasive on Lemmy.

I don't know if it's naive teenagers or just a lot of out of touch people with fringe views, but it's worse than reddit sometimes.

  • I'm not so sure. Large lobbies have greater economic power than us average people, but they aren't strong enough to defy macroeconomic trends. There are many factors that could turn and cause prices to collapse, we just don't know when or if they will occur.
