  • Ah ok, thanks! A while back I tried Jornay, which is also time release methylphenidate. Now I am just on instant release adderall. Slow release didn't work for that either. It's like it takes too long in my system.

    It's good so far!

I'm in the US with the typical high deductible health insurance you get from an employer in a professional office job. But I'm also in a unique situation where the treatment for a different condition of mine is so expensive that the drug company pays your deductible. So it's almost like I have really good insurance that covers everything.

  • I think it's more that we are way into blissful ignorance in this country.

If you polled the citizens to ask whether America was founded/discovered by European explorers, the vast majority would agree. But of course, even if 80% or 90% get it right that still means tens of millions got it wrong.

But if you polled the citizens to ask whether US territory was simply discovered or stolen from existing inhabitants by murdering/genociding them, I bet you would flip the numbers.

  • Very true. It's like an order of magnitude difference, where 1% income is in the "approaching a million" ballpark, but 1%er net worth is above 10 million.

But relative to the billionaires like I was talking about, they are at about the same tier of "poor person but with class," lol.

  • The timing of this almost feels like the CIA threatening Trump. He can cause a ruckus and ruin ordinary people's lives, but if he starts to threaten the global economy and/or civilization that happens to supply the billionaires with things like drugs and yachts and sex slaves employees to run them, history might just have to repeat itself.

The article makes it sound like this was scheduled though.

  • Yeah. The top 1% of incomes is generally $500K - $1M depending on which site I look at.

In the eyes of billionaires, people at that level are just poors that get paid too much to keep them humble, but with respect to regular incomes they are the rich people building investment portfolios in things like stocks and being a landlord to 5-10 units.

  • That depends on what you mean by proven.

Time dilation is easily measured and it's essential for things like GPS to adjust for it. And we finally got that picture of a black hole recently where you can see the light from behind the black hole wrapping around. I think it was Sagittarius A?

  • But can electromagnetism at all emerge if the quantum mechanics dont exist to emerge things like magnetism and some of the behavior of electrons?

Well yeah, sure. Earlier you said something like "electromagentism is caused by quantum phenomena," but you can say that about almost every object and behavior in the universe! We don't have a theory of everything but the standard model and quantum field theory explain a lot.

  • Not wanting to go to a concentration camp is understandable, especially if you have a high paying job.

Not wanting OTHER people you've never met to go to concentration camps? Whoaaa there Che, put down that AK-47!

  • I can totally see this coming.

The developed world has a population growth problem. Population growth has slowed or reversed in many countries, but the global economy is designed around infinite growth, fed by an infinitely growing pool of workers and customers. Then when they retire they can be taken care of by the infinitely growing population of young people.

It takes zero imagination to picture this administration forcing "high value human resources" to remain in the country, including putting them on no fly lists. Unfortunately since they are stupid, the brain drain has already started.

  • Damn, that is well said. This sentence in particular:

We are losing our respect for the profound, our empathy for the other, and our curiosity for the unknown.

is the kind of thing that sounds like an empty platitude when your mind/life is in a bad state, but after a few years of progress and healing I read that line and wish I could adequately express the years of reflection and learning that can be distilled down to such a short statement.

  • Yeah I’ve said this a few times, but honestly anybody who can interact with Lemmy is in the upper tiers of the scale compared with the vast majority of humans who have ever lived.

Obviously that does not mean that individuals cannot have terrible luck and circumstances.

  • I was thinking of 10^16kg diamond storage inside a larger SSD that’s the size of a large moon, similar to how a real SSD has data stored in tiny little slivers of silicon inside a much much larger device.

I should have explained that one better. It’s easy to imply such details to keep text shorter.

  • 1024 is a lot bigger than 6×1023

Well yeah it’s almost double, but I wrote the comment as a mental estimation of the order of magnitude, so it doesn’t change the substance of the discussion.

I mean at the beginning I arbitrarily picked a number in that 1040 to 1044 range and that’s a factor of 1:10,000 rather than 1:2, lol.

  • No!

    Jump
  • We have a few dogs. One is a yellow lab. He is absolutely the empty skull of the bunch.

This derpy wood knot dog face reminds me of him so much. If I had this piece of wood I'd learn some new skills and buy some new tools just to perfectly preserve it!

  • You make some good points, and even though the labels man and straight work for me, I have likewise been focusing more and more on the whole "know thyself and live life the way that really works for you" thing and loving it.

But back to my quip: You make some good points. I can foresee how much my dumb angry conservative relatives would hate it! No labels? No categories? Next you're going to tell me that humans don't naturally need strict hierarchy in their society to survive!

  • This was a fun one to look up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shannon_number

It looks like the number of valid chess positions is in the neighborhood of 1040 to 1044, and the number of atoms in the Earth is around 10^50. Yeah the latter is bigger, but the former is still absolutely huge.

Let's assume we have a magically amazing diamond-based solid state storage system that can represent the state of a chess square by storing it in a single carbon atom. The entire board is stored in a lattice of just 64 atoms. To estimate, let's say the total number of carbon atoms to store everything is 10^42.

Using Avogadro's number, we know that 6.022x1023 atoms of carbon will weigh about 12 grams. For round numbers again, let's say it's just 1024 atoms gives you 10 grams.

That gives 1042 / 1024 = 1018 quantities of 10 grams. So 1019 grams or 10^16 kg. That is like the mass of 100 Mount Everests just in the storage medium that can store multiple bits per atom! That SSD would be the size of a small large moon!

  • We as a society did not forget how to build good houses, write good software, design good vehicles, or anything like that.

We just stopped caring about it because the core purpose for any business is to increase revenue, decrease costs, grow, and absorb market share (exceptions being niche and boutique places that price accordingly). And may of us as individuals think we should run our own finances in a similar way.

For instance, let's say I can build 100 shitty crooked houses with the cheapest and non-background-checked workers, with the same time and money invested that it takes you to build 50 beautifully crafted and solid homes with your team of experienced carpenters. I can sell my shitty homes for 20% less than you since the home buyers are also mostly shopping on price and stats, then I am going to win and once you're out of business I will be building 150 shitty crooked houses at a time.
