  • My joke in my household is that no clean flat surfaces can exist.

My medicated ADHD ass is still plenty messy, but my non-medicated wife will put any item down in any place when she’s done with it or it’s in her way. Then it disappears from existence for an hour or a month or so. Unless it’s outside or in a room we don’t use daily… then the possible range expands a lot.

  • Life in all its forms is pretty damn amazing. At work while I’m working on my computer shit I am fortunately able to look out the windows at the trees, the birds, the deer, and whatever else wanders by. And even at home we have a bunch of animals.

So much amazing stuff just gets ignored by so many people. That goes for pretty much the entire universe though, not just trees.

  • “Single payer” refers to the government being the one paying for healthcare and prescriptions, and thus having tons of leverage to negotiate lower costs while also providing healthcare to everybody.

Basically, it was one possible method to bring healthcare in the US up to the level of the rest of the developed world.

  • Searching article for the word terrorism… Nope, even just “terr” only points me to “interrupted.”

Funny how they missed that. “Terrorism” around teslas is such popular news these days!

  • Getting paid to do something that’s massively beneficial to your health? (…I squint at your post and notice euros & kms…) ohhhh.

Here in the US I had a past employer with medical benefits that charged you more if you were a smoker or didn’t engage with their wellness training. Almost the same, right? /s

Distance-wise, I could totally ride my bike to work. The shorter, more level route is only like 4km. But those kms are through American suburbia & neighboring commercial areas. And I would be the only bicycle they would see all day while angrily driving and texting in their 3-ton vehicle going 50mph(80km/h)+ on multi-lane roads.

  • This is one of those areas in my mental health journey where I’ve learned to accept that what my brain needs is not necessarily what my conscious personality thinks would be ideal.

I love my home and my family, and I’m an introverted reclusive nerd like I’m sure many others here. But whether it’s the ADHD or some other factors, I not only get way more done in the office but I feel better mentally and physically when I drive to work to do work things, then drive home to be in home mode. It helps that my “commute” is only a few miles on a fun quiet twisty country road.

In the last few weeks I’ve gone into the office every single day and had zero work from home days (I work on embedded systems and have needed to interact with certain in-office hardware) and I have actually felt great. Younger me would probably be horrified to hear this realization that that must somehow be wrong, lol.

The funny thing is that the rest of my team works from home so often that nobody bothers me all day!

  • At a minimum any states bordering Canada, including those bordering the 4 Great Lakes shared with Canada, should get a vote of which country to go with.

Pennsylvania is 100% included, and honestly if Indiana and Illinois go for it despite being on the “wrong” Great Lake, I’m not going to complain.

  • My company is your standard Dell + M365 outfit, but we on the dev team can install linux because our product is an embedded linux system. It is so damn nice.

It is so tempting to wipe my Windows partition and add that space to my home directory. It just feels like there must be SOME reason they wouldn't want me to. I don't ever actually use it. I will occasionally fire up a windows VM to check the windows version of one of our build artifacts.

  • He is such a ridiculous asswipe that it seems like he’s doing it on purpose to help distract from other billionaires falling in line or random horrible shit the administration is doing.

I doubt it’s an act, and I suspect he’s really just that much of an asswipe, but damn.

  • There were some hoops for me to jump through in order to get secure remote access working for sure. Fortunately for my family that connect remotely, it’s transparent for them and doesn’t require any kind of VPN or tunnel. They just need URL, user, and password.

And for subtitles I’m not sure what the differences are between the two, but I’ve used them plenty on jellyfin and they seemed to work well and render nicely.

  • I have a lifetime Plex pass.

I tried out Jellyfin last month.

    Now Plex is uninstalled.

Even if we ignore the differences when it comes to matters of FOSS, cost, corporate control, privacy, etc, Jellyfin’s performance is just so much better.

Setting it up to run over https while fully self-hosted was a learning process for somebody who isn’t a web dev, but holy crap was it worth it.
