  • This is exactly why I do the dishes after a good meal. I can't relax with the thought of a sink full of dishes, they need to be handled!

  • Not me, but my parents, though I discovered it during a visit.

Bats. They had a bat infestation. This was up at the highest point of the house in the loft, they were remodeling and left the walls open - a hole to the outside let one in, and I guess a bunch decided it was a nice place to hang out. There were dozens.

As for dealing with it - bats are endangered, so you can't exterminate them. If I remember correctly the total spend was just over 10 grand. This also included installing multiple permanent one way doors so if any bats manage to get in again, they have multiple ways to get out.

  • Is there another meaning to "PSA" that isn't "public service announcement"? It confuses me being in the title as this entire post is written as a suggestion / CTA, not a PSA.

  • I switched at the start of the month, with the uncertainty around the economy I finally did my PC upgrade I'd been procrastinating, and - why get a windows license? Just go Linux.

  • I haven't played the game, but I would recommend checking out ProtonDB for experiences from people who have.

There are 406 reports, I find it useful to look for reports from people with similar hardware to mine.

  • Every time I recall those episodes, and the pain, it gets easier to do, emotionally.

And theoretically I could just get it operated on - there have been improvements in the field. But the prospect of going under the knife is scary, especially in an area where one fuckup or miscalculation could lead to partial paralysis for life. Throw in a mix of abusive American healthcare and... Weekly therapy is more preferable.

  • No. I've considered it though, but I'm a tad worried it won't make a difference considering the options I've seen probably don't result in 200lbs of force being applied.

  • In my spine my L5-S1 and L4-L5 are herniated (as of 2017, haven't checked if any more are). Full on herniated, not bulging. It started when I was 20, and my doctor said surgery should be avoided since it could impact my quality of life significantly at my age (not that my QoL wasn't already severely impacted). Epidurals and physical therapy didn't help.

Back then it wasn't miserable 24/7 but it had it's moments. Eventually I had an "episode" where I was bedridden in immense amounts of pain for a solid week. During that desperation I found the IDD option and started that. It was rough back then at the start. But within weeks the constant pain died down and I recovered mobility as well as my sciatica improved.

Through... Losing a job I discovered the effects wear off after 2ish months and I start being susceptible to the episodes and random function loss again, so now I just go weekly to keep things peachy. It isn't full recovery obviously, I still wind up in pain if I do too much with my back, even stuff as little as bending over slightly to do the dishes (because I'm tall), but it beats being disabled in constant pain... Those few episodes I've had haunt me. Being so helpless I couldn't even.

  • I undergo weekly spinal decompression therapy. While not exactly the same as the medieval torture devices, being strapped in and having my spine pulled from both directions with 200lbs of force is pretty close.

And yes, it feels amazing for a second or two.

  • I know this is satire but it does hurt. Though in my experience my most concerning code reviews are when I review other senior devs code. Unfortunately my company decided senior devs were a tenure thing.

  • I have used AirVPN for half a decade and never ran into any issues, if you're looking for an alternative with port forwarding.

  • If you don't want to disable biometric auth, familiarize yourself with your phone and see if it has lockdown mode. Apple phones and most modern Android phones support it, using it will require your password / pin for unlocks. Put it into lockdown mode for the flight.

  • I work full time at a computer. I have two jobs, so I put in 68 hours a week (second is 28 hours a week, no overlap).

I have no issues with eye fatigue best I can tell, that or I've just gotten so used to it. I will note I do have the blue light filter on my glasses lenses my optician recommended.

  • Hamster

  • Considering the little girl brought it in, it's definitely more plausible she wouldn't notice the magnet. And considering the amount of parents who give hamsters as pets and never take any responsibility over it themselves, even more so.

But I'd also assume, with no real insight into the behavior of hamsters, that one in this situation would wind up either tearing it's cheek off (depending on the strength of the magnet) or figuring out it can dislodge / move enough to free it.

  • When I got into the space I had to find a private tracker, but since then I've had no issues with Readarr aside from some series being slow to get their metadata updated, but that's not a Readarr issue.

  • I find no discouragement of strategy in the game. Higher numbers don't always win, unless they're sufficiently high enough. I can design a fleet with weapon and armor/shield focuses to counter theirs, as well as choosing the engagement style (via the combat computer modes in the ship designer) to counter theirs.

If I don't want to strategize I can simply wait longer for a bigger fleet and newer tech, but if I want to take on enemies larger than me, especially early game, I have to take the time to strategize.

  • If I'm using Bluetooth earbuds I can receive a call from Signal or WhatsApp. So it stands to reason it's possible a Bluetooth device exists to act like earbuds but for a landline phone. I found a few (cell2jack and XLink BT HD) but could not verify if they'd work for anything other than normal phone calls.
