  • Minimum sentences sounds like pretty bad. There is cases of legally wrong, morally right. Think about killing your violent spouse which while not being within the limit of self-defence is pretty different from killing your spouse. It's the job of criminal lawyer and prosecutors to come with reason to give a lighter/harder sentence and the judge job to listen to this arguments, compared with similar cases and sentence guideline to give the fairest sentence possible.

A person who seek therapy, pay penalties to the victim, has now a job, and already try to be a better person at the time of sentencing has nothing to do in jail

  • As any other problems, it's an issue with political will

    • Have minimum delivery fee to force people to visit physical store over "online shopping" and promote farmer marker and city-centre (village-centre) shopping so people interact with each other
    • End-up US style suburbanization, these nice house in a quiet area are great to sleep-in but means you're away from every social activity, and when you're too young/too old to drive it turns into house arrest
    • Increase subsidises for non profit-club, especially for the one having under 25 and above 65 members If you go playing scrabble, theatre or practice Karate you stop being lonely
    • Carpooling parking and lanes to push worker to interact with people living nearby
  • Work less as a society, so finally switch to the 32h weeks and setup the Universal basic income, it would allow to share the work (because someone needs to pick-up the thrash) and leverage on the productivity gains to benefit to everyone.

Provide training, and support life-long education, you should keep your unemployment rights while attending university as an adult for example, but also offer more short training including some level update for people whose skill got rusty in a previous job.

Promote non merchant activities. A volunteer who coaches kids sport or plays amateur theatre in nursing home and hospital does more good to society than a marketing corporate executive, why are the latter seen as more important ?

  • D&D

I've been playing RPG for decades, but play D&D less than once a decade, and my impression goes form awful to not worth my money/time. When I was young and broke, having to buy a player manual + a GM guide + a monster manual when tons of RPG would fit in a single book (Yes I know, clan-books for let's say Vampire are also a money-pit), was out of my budget, then every-time I played D&D, feel like the story were not interesting as concept like alignment and some spells like detect lies would kill many interesting plot. Too which you had a lot of character optimisation often over the long-term (If you didn't take that feat a low level you cannot have the killer feat at high level), let alone the people mixing RPG and miniature games

Sure you can have some funs game with D&D and play it differently but there is so many other game out-there (and so few time) , that why would I even bother joining a D&D game rather than another,

  • The working world is very different from the laid back, very slow moving world of Academia.

i wished that corporate was moving faster than academia, but its actually even slower and more conservative, spend 5 years getting a project to be finally put on the road-map, start working on-it for 2 years, get it descoped and postponed 2 years latter, then suddently have some manager panicking because we can't meet our contractual commitment This is what I've been telling for years and why I was hired, go for a quick and dirty plan-B to have some QA telling you they can't approve the release.

You can do a lot of critic to academia, but it's way faster and more efficient than private corporation

  • Yes but

Full healthcare coverage is typically limited to fiscal resident, so you'll have to pay out of pocket. That said to my understanding the US price are so absurd, that we're like 10 times cheaper than you before insurance like a GP visit costing let's say 30 EUR, while in the US you'd pay 300 US$ (Giving a doctor seeing 6 patient per hour revenue in the 1800 US$ per hour that's just ridiculous, even when deducing taxes/rent/insurance and more). This is also why medical tourism is a thing.

That said, a big limit, is do you want to be away from your loved ones, in a country you don't speak the language post surgery ?

  • This shouldn't be a political position, but an appointed civil servant one. You want the criminal justice to work on a reliable way through the country, and not let any populist politician apply their own exotic method.

I believe the US has tons of exemple of bad sheriffs but good speakers doing more harms than good

  • Do you guy·rl·s like solarpunk ?

A tilt shift aerial photogaphy of a solarpunk city : A bunch of mid-sized apartments with solar roofs form a heart shaped complex over a green central place, while being surrounder by trees and field, people pass-by on bicycle on a dirt path

    Using bing image generator

  • With an entrance exam, which involve a panel of judges and university professor, and the N best grades get the available positions. To limit corruption, at leas where I am, these exam are anomyzed (even one you take at university are), so the people doing the grading doesn't know who they grade, and only afterwards another person checks the name and the grade

  • In many cases you don't need mini at all, it's rpg not a miniature game.

No mini nor battlemap gives more freedom to everyone (at the price of less tactical depth), and if you need a view on the situation, a whiteboard with a sketch + cross/letter does can bring you pretty far

  • ELI5 why would you elect a judge? You want judge to be independent from politics and just legal expert, here to apply strictly the law and limit as much as possible the weight of their personal opinions, so every citizen is judged the same way.

Electing judge seems backward and totally opposite to that goal

  • Captain obvious sneaking in, but There is tons of legit way to exercise, not just lifting weight in the gym, you can look for Volley-ball, Rock-dancing, or karate-class all of that is a legit way to exercise, which may even be cheaper and more fun than going to a gym.

    Regarding your other points

    • Get a T-shirt and either a short or a pair of legging, to start-with you don't need any of these high-end expensive fabric (Which may help if you plan to climb an alpine summit or run a marathon, but not to lift some weight casually). Total cost should be in the 10-15 EUR range (It sucks to live in a world where clothing is built by slave-like-labour).
    • Most gym would include a couple of coached session as part of their beginner package. But a typical program would be like warm-up on a threadmill/eliptical then a bunch of strength exercise either on machine or free weight, and 10 minutes of cool-down with stretching, you can modulate duration/intensity depending on your goals.
    • You can do a lot at home with body weight. However, being in the Gym sometimes helps as you are in a dedicated place with a dedicated time-slot. ideally choose a place either near your home, or on your commute, if not you'll never go there
  • The whole We play a game so you have to cooperate together even if role-play wise it makes no sense is a bad practice, May-be not at the point you'll leave the table but definitely a serious sign that the table doesn't function properly.

Luckily, there is a very easy fix Do a session zero, and build a coherent party ab initio, it include in game reason for the party to work together, coherent goals (because when player A wants to abolish the reign of the emperor, and player B wants to defend the emperor you'll have a PvP fight within 3 session) and a meta discussion to have a pallet of skills matching the party's goal (At least in more epic game where you don't want to feel powerless). Almost every RPG published in the last 10-15 years contains an extensive session zero guide and tons of tips to build a relevant party.

If someone wants to play a law priest in a pirate campaign or any other character not fitting the campaign theme or opposing other PCs, it's perfectly OK to tell the no. Obviously if everybody is aligned on some PvP and betrayal the answer may be different, but it's again something to address in session zero.

  • It's way to avoid a lot of rpg horro stories the classical one include

    • Clear description of the game (which is done in this comic) properly managing expectations is already great
    • Line and veil, in the sense writing done theme that you don't want at the table, and themes which can be present but not in plain sight for example most people do close the door when having sex, so let's do the same in tabletop no need to go further than the bard joined the elf in their room, and what happened behind closed door stay behind closed door
    • X card, which is a kind of last ressort measure and allows anyone to stop a scene going to far

Then, some people push further and added way to modulate the intensity of a scene, like asking for more or less depending on how you feel. Being at the verge of tears after a consented intense scene can be one of your best RPG memory ever but being at the verge of tear after feeling like another player assaulted you, can be a horror story, and the difference is just about Accepting it

  • Yes, even non profit clubs need a constant influx of newcomers, whose member due will pay the rent when the ancient will leave. And for game shop it's even worse. It's a hobby where a 50 € book can entertain 4 adults for year, so you need new comer to keep selling.

My local rpg club runs monthly discovery session and many GM gladly take beginners at their table. (most) RPG have relatively straightforward basic rules, any semi decent GM can give you a 30 minutes briefing with enough information to play. Most of these hugs books aren't rules but story, and special abilities (e.g. Magic spells and potions) so you don't need to read them before playing.

Usually, I advise to look for one shots session to start it allows to discover a game and test the alchemy with other players without signing up for a 2 years campaign.

  • In a huge stadium, with a grass field An green skined orc wearing a leather armour runs holding a huge fantastic bloody axe. The orc is about to shoot inside a bloody human skull Behind him, a bloody severed limb lies on the ground.
