  • Someone could attack that one site and bring the whole lemmyverse down.

not really - all it would do is be annoying to open links in apps. probably temporarily, as another would spring up

matrix is decentralised, but they have matrix.to

  • i do actually quite like rush, though i must admit i'd never heard of yyz until this thread

  • i always do, but it's mostly to be facetious - i wouldn't be hugely surprised if people didn't know what i was talking about

  • i'll edit with more in a short while

    • monitor profile switcher - absolutely invaluable if you use multiple monitor layouts
    • iconviewer - somewhat niche, but an easy way of seeing all icons in multiple dll files
    • pangobright - washes out the desktop so it's not a real replacement for brightness, but if you have a migraine or something and want your screen darker at any cost this is handy
    • pasteintofile - does what it says on the tin; very handy
    • rbtray - minimise any window to systray (i'm not linking this one as i only have the exe file, and i can't remember which of the multiple versions available it is)
    • retrobar - i don't actually use this as it doesn't work with 7+tt, but it's a neat idea
    • universal pause button - pause any game (or programme, i guess) from the systray
    • touchcursor - doesn't quite fit the question, but it's so good i'm including it. basically dreymar's colemak extend layer, but without the need for ahk
    • open-shell (was classic shell (was classic start)) - better start menu with a multitude of options, and some taskbar improvements
    • cairoshell - never properly used it, and it doesn't quite answer the op question; but i want to draw attention to the almost complete shell replacement for windows
    • powertoys - others have mentioned it, but i'm adding it here so it's a more comprehensive list
    • wox - simple, fast launcher that integrates with everything

    windows store apps:

  • Then I will include them on my watchlist and will try to post at least from time to time.

thank you, i do appreciate it

As I said in other comments, thanks to all of you who create and moderate communities. For now, I’m just trying to generate content, which I know is the easier part.

well i haven't actually had to do much moderating yet — i've mostly been balancing seeding some content without spamming the local feed; as well as discussing them on matrix, and sometimes promoting them on threads like this when i remember

  • Note that I said: “you look a bit more organized than small subs”, and that’s not a very high bar, hehe :P.

oi! and i thought you were nice

More seriously, I thought you were related to reddit’s Imaginary Network, which is huge and with some big power-users.

nope, not at all. they're just the only subs i still follow by rss, and no-one else was making them here so i took up that mantle. and now i have 7 imaginary communities... and there are at least 2 more that i want to exist, so i'm hoping someone makes them soon

  • thank you!

(also, i'm flattered that you think i look organised, i'm very new to this so i don't feel organised at all)

  • a few others and i are trying to get some of the imaginary network off the ground - the ones i'm particularly fond of are imaginary trains and imaginary dieselpunk, but there's a whole list in the sidebar

unfortunately a considerable chunk went down with lemmy.fmhy.ml, but i'm in contact with the guy behind them and he plans to reopen them soon

  • i personally think it's sacrificed productivity in favour of hideous pastel vomit, but i realise that's just my opinion.

  • well probably, in fact i've never had it turned on. but it's part of the m3 design spec, so i'm going to use it as an example to criticise the m3 spec.

  • it's a google launcher "feature".

it's only available on a13, i think, and not all launchers support it. but it is part of the m3 design language, so i included it as an example

see here for more info, or here

  • i hated material ew as soon as it was announced. so much padding everywhere, and so little contrast - to paraphrase the incredibles: if everything's orange^[other colours are available, i just like orange], nothing is. your eyes will adjust to it. i want actionable items to stand out, not be a slightly lighter shade of the same colour. it also looks rather like a fischer-price my first phone interface

i must say, if an app (for example, jerboa) uses material 3, i usually try to look for an alternative

    some examples:

with material design, it's clear what's a header, what's a footer,^[look at the lack of contrast on that "new post" button] and what each button's state is.

with all the padding, there's also less space; leading to less functionality

with material ew, it's much harder to tell at a glance what each app is, one has to scrutinise the icon rather than just tell at a glance by colour

i also really dislike monet; the way it pulls this horrible washed out sickly pastel colour from a wallpaper and washes it over the entire app. if i just pulled one accent colour, and applied that to, say, the header and main action button, i'd like it a lot more

  • yeah i'm with you there. i understand why programmes do it, a one-off purchase often isn't enough to support continued development and server costs, but i have never bought one in my life. i actually had bought pocketcasts pro, and then they went subscription only and i immediately moved to antennapod.

topically, sync for lemmy has just released and everyone's going wild over it. it's a £16/year subscription. or £2/month…

  • i'd never noticed how much the twitter logo looks like an upside-down sonic the hedgehog

  • You're using an analogy as the basis for an argument. That's not what analogies are for. Analogies are useful explanatory tools, but only within a limited domain

actually that's exactly what i was using it for.

Kicking a baby is not the same[^1] as creating an artwork, so there are areas in which they don't map to each other.

if you read carefully, you'll see that writing is analogous to creating an artwork, and kicking a baby is analogous to doing something that someone has asked you not to, and you're continuing anyways. if you read even more carefully, you'll see that i implied i wasn't making a moral comment on ai, piracy, or even kicking babies

You can't dodge flaws in your argument by adding a "don't respond unless you agree with me" clause on your comment.

i didn't intend to. i did it so i wouldn't have to waste my time arguing with those who don't understand analogies. however i seem to be doing that anyways, so if you'll excuse me, i'm going to stop

edit: okay, i've been reading the rest of this thread, and you clearly don't understand analogy. i have no idea why you clicked on my comment

[^1]: yes. analogous doesn't mean "the same". it means "able to draw demonstrative parallels between
