  • Growing up and never going there I always thought Hooters waitresses were topless. When I found out they weren’t, the whole thing actually sounded more pervy to me.

  • i read this as bing-ed some Audioslave... oops

  • I used to always go for NPR but now it's psychology, biographies or crime analysis on YouTube.

  • I feel like tamales should be part of this. Even pupusas

  • I agree a lot of commercial corn tortillas are not good. I particularly don't like the fake-soft ones that have dough conditioners and preservatives for no reason. But with as much cooking as I do, I can't bring myself to make tortillas when I make masa - I always end up doing pupusas, arepas or tamales. My main use of corn tortillas is enchiladas casserole style so homemade ones are kind of pointless since they 75% disintegrate.

  • Corn tortillas. It's a lot easier to just buy some.

  • I've tried to err on the side of caution on that myself, because it's pretty embarrassing to act like someone is trying to hit on you when they're not, on either side. I've had people act like they think I'm flirting with them when I'm not also which is awkward.

  • I checked the website, and apparently they make two!

  • I for sure wouldn't trust some weird dude serving me "lion's milk", ha ha. And yeah, in Lansing they served it in a small tumbler on the rocks. It is very strong, I think the bottle I got (which was very ME style and looked awesome) was 90 proof.

  • From what I read here, raspberries don't have enough sugar to be distilled by themselves. I didn't realize it but apparently the himbeergeist is an infusion.

  • It's led to me forming shitty memories I have a hard time forgetting. A vicious circle.

  • someone on an alcoholic sub on reddit told me they tried it. They swear it does get you fucked up in addition to just poisoning you.

  • Vikre in Duluth MN makes an aquavit. I think it's pretty good.

  • I love that stuff! Helps that I like anise. It's a lot like Ouzo, of course... I first ran into arak at a college bar in Lansing, MI. It's cool how it turns milky when you add water. A similar spirit is aguardiente, the national liquor of Columbia. Arak is hard to find but I located it in a couple stores in Denver.

  • Similar to kirchwasser, I’d guess? I love fruit brandies. At various times I’ve drank raspberry, pear, cherry and more common ones like grappa.

  • It's true, the way our capitalist system is set up it's mainly the workers and less wealthy people in general who get screwed by progress and obsolescence. Wealthy people are very worried about it too of course, since something like phasing out coal could mean bankruptcy for them and they'd have to, oh no, get a job or something. Or you know, there goes the family dynasty... That's harder to feel sorry for though, and it's a lot easier for them to transition to something else, with some foresight.

  • Sure, I agree with that. The idea that once people are making money a certain way it has to continue forever is harmful.

  • Yep. Not even speculation. Look how upset they get when someone is sworn into office on something besides a bible, as if being a Christian is a requirement to hold office. No shame or second thoughts.

There was a court case I read about decades ago in American Atheist, a publication by Madalyn O'Hair, who was a separation of church and state activist. It involved someone (maybe her?) testifying in a court case in Texas, and they didn't want to swear on a bible. The judge determined that they couldn't believe any testimony from someone who wouldn't swear on a bible because they didn't 'believe in a future state of reward or punishment'... as in an afterlife in heaven or hell. Just nuts. That's seriously the only thing keeping Christians moral? The threat of hell or promise of heaven?

  • Ha, yeah, I guess my intro made it sound like it went through and then was closed. I was so happy when it finally didn't happen and the obviously corrupt politician was gone.
