  • I know, this was inresponse to the other post about which parts of the GDPR to implement. If I had to pick any one feature to carry over from the GDPR into whatever legislation we get on this side of the ocean, I'd pick the right to deletion.

  • It's been that way for a while now.

When online patching became a thing most games studios quickly figured out they could push the game to press in whatever state, then work on fixing the bugs in between code complete and GA, and simply push those fixes as a launch day patch.

And commercially, it makes sense. The greatest the game is on the shelves, the earlier the investors see ROI. It's just a shame if this calculated gamble backfires and the degree find way too many bugs to fix in the window between code complete and release. That's when you get Cyberpunk 2077...

  • There's plenty stuff to criticise her for without having to bring up that completely unfounded sex trafficking story.

How about the fact that she helped popularize and legitimise Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop grift? Or that she gave doctor Phil a head start to his media persona and subsequent popularity? And then died it again with Dr Oz? And what about her help in legitimising Jenny McCarthy's "vaccines cause autism" claims by lending her a global stage and audience for het wackjob pseudoscience? Or the time she legitimised cultist weirdo John of God? Or helped Tom Cruise deflect some serious allegations related to Scientology by allowing him to go bananas on her couch?

Like I said, there's enough stuff she legitimately did to criticise her for without some fake news conspiracy bs.

  • Yeah, that's stretching it a little (probably based off the Cracked article from a while back). Ace of Base was named after Ace of Spades (a song by Motorhead) as a reference/homage, anything beyond that is purely speculation as the band have categorically denied it.

And yes, Ulf was indeed in a band that wrote some pretty heinous stuff but he has both repeatedly apologised for that, made clear he no longer believes in any of this, and made explicitly clear that Ace of Base never shared these ideas.

Sources for those wanting to read up on it: Original article in Vice: https://www.vice.com/en/article/rm35nr/ace-of-bases-secret-nazi-past Speculation laden clickbait Cracked article that spawned a bunch of unfounded and unconfirmed theories about the origins of the band's name, meaning/readings of their lyrics, etc: https://www.cracked.com/blog/how-90s-pop-band-secretly-sold-nazism-to-america Follow-up in Huffington post: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/ace-of-base-nazi-past-lyrics_n_3148797 and https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/04/26/ace-of-bases-ulf-ekberg-addresses-neo-nazi-allegations-_n_3161454.html

  • I know you're being funny, but to answer the question I posited: every summer, after people came back from towing their caravans up through the mountains, my dad's shop would be replacing loads of clutches with people complaining about the weird smells their car started making. Or the sudden trouble they had shifting.

  • The article pretty much spells it out - OPEC controls the price of oil globally through their massive hand in the supply side of the industry. Even if you get your wish and have O&G completely deregulate here in Canada, the reality is that they aren't going to make a dent in global oil prices regardless of output. If we produce a ton of oil, OPEC simply shuts their taps further until the prices equalize to a point that benefits the members of the cartel.

Other than a reduction in taxes on gasoline at the pump, Canada has very little effective means of changing the cost of oil globally.

Unless you're suggesting we turn into Venezuela #2 and we turn all oil companies and wells into government property, build a crap ton of refining capacity on the tax payer's penny and sell the resulting oil products at cost / at a loss. But frankly, that outcome is even worse as now we'd have 50 cents/L gas, but all our other taxes would go through the roof.

  • True, hence why evacuating the whole city is such a big deal. I don't think it ever happened before. Oh by the way: I read they're explicitly telling people to not try to evacuate on boat, so perhaps that's not the best idea.

  • Terrible news. Hope everyone gets out safe. I want to say this is unprecedented, as (to my knowledge) this is the first total evacuation of a provincial or territorial capital in history, but I am not 100% sure. Can anyone confirm?

  • I wholly agree with the author of this article, but implementing something like this will meet a lot of resistance. Let's not forget that cigarettes are a relatively new phenomenon, whereas alcohol is something we've consumed as a species since prehistoric times. There are a lot of cultural, social, and historical ties to the use of alcohol that people won't let go easily and will make any attempt to reduce alcohol consumption an uphill battle.

  • Ah okay, that makes sense. I'll keep checking in on the project then until that's ready. I don't want to use my system's default browser due to corporate filtering, so whenever this feature is implemented I'm ditching Sync :-)

  • Exactly. All the memes and stickers about letting the CEL stay on are funny, but if you don't know what code is triggering the light, you are gambling with your car, or even your safety. Seriously people, get a CEL checked out, and then decide if you feel it's worth fixing. Most auto parts stores, dealers, etc. will happily do it for you, often at no cost, but at least be an informed consumer instead of just hoping it will be okay.

  • What a surprise. Said no-one.

Seriously through, this is the result of Putin's lack of backbone in declaring this an actual war, which would both allow him to recruit conscripts and reservists, and cause quite a bit of international and domestic push back. The only (currently preferred) alternative appears to be to just roll the dice on giving convicted killers weapons and hoping for the best.

This entire operation has made a joke of the Russian military.

  • Any chance you'll include the option to select which browser to use as the default rendered? Sync let's me choose that currently, and it's one of my main reasons for using that over Voyager, because I much prefer the Voyager UI (and ad-free experience).
