  • Why I am not using Plex:

    • It kept adding its own menu items / sections to my home screen with its shilled content like some annoying TV streams etc. Ever so often after updates etc it would keep adding it back
    • It phones home
    • Their servers has been hacked at least two times
    • They dealt poorly with the hacks so I don’t trust them to know anything about my content or usage

Their last hack was the straw for me. I have a lifetime Plex Pass. I still refuse to use Plex anymore.

  • Well first year I’d finally get a RTX 4090, new car, temporary new home and quite a lot to family and friends. Year 2-4 would be saving up / buying connecting property towards my dream home, and then year 5-10 would be saving up towards a sailing yacht. After that probably some of the fancy coffee equipment that James Hoffman uses.

  • I ended up buying the Vertex2 device from HDFury. It solved all my audio issues by extracting audio from HDMI and sending it separately to my sound bar. Meanwhile, the video signal adds fake Dolby Vision support for my Samsung TV so that I get HDR whenever it’s available.

I do need to use Infuse as the media player on the Apple TV to get Dolby Atmos / Vision to work on most movies. I used to have to switch to the NVIDIA Shield to get that to work, but can’t remember a movie that has not worked lately.

  • I may have misunderstood, but afaik it’s still not generally allowed to use self driving trucks - each case / technology will need permission. Those are the once that should be withdrawn when necessary due to safety concerns, instead of giving a blanket ban on the technology for workforce protection reasons.

  • I may sound cynical, but protecting jobs is hardly ever a good argument for blocking new technology in my opinion. You’re at best delaying the inevitable. Society is more likely better off learning early how to use the workforce for new and better tasks. Of course, this needs a healthy and working society, so I of course understand the individual concerns.

Safety on the other hand is a very valid reason to hold back new technology.

  • I won’t stop sending to Google recipients. I have moved my email to Proton, but because of lacking search functionality there I have not yet migrated historic emails.

I’ve stopped using other Google services and deleted data except for Maps and YouTube. Maps I can probably get rid of. YouTube I’ll keep but may be able to use a more fake account.

  • Yes!

It’s super annoying to comment sometimes because in the middle of the comment I’ll want to see the thread context, but it’s impossible. And there is no draft, so you get a popup to cancel, accept and lose all text, read the thread again, then go back to comment. Yes of course it’s partly possible to copy / paste a comment, but I do find the process very annoying.

It should ideally be easy to read the whole comment chain you are replying to while commenting.

  • I did not plan to upgrade this year, but also didn’t expect Spatial Video capture until next year. I’d like to start capturing video for the Apple Vision Pro as soon as possible.

Pricing though… translating my local price back to US it will be $2245 for the Max with 1TB 🤢

  • For your consolation, many “answers” there are poor and just copy pasted from some open website anyway.

You have to realize that their business model is marking questions as answered so that they can paywall access and lure people in. This might affect their quality control…
