Brittish rail actually did this in yhe 60s or 70s. Some guy rocked in looked at all the unprofitable local stations to improve efficency.
The results were the profitable stations lost revenue. Because people who jumped on the local station who nolonger could just drove all the way to the destination.
On topic I'd suspect something similar would happen eith royal mail because fuck trying to figure out if your package will get where its needed on time ehen you can just send it via courier a d take that out of the equation.
