  • So? The trick is to keep developing the technology, not give up because it doesn't immediately deliver unlimited energy.

  • Part of that truth is also that there is positive news out there, more than people are necessarily aware of, but OPs very valid point is you rarely find that discussed on Lemmy. And when it is brought up people take great delight in torpedoing it. That's not realistic, that's defeatist doomerism.

  • I mean, I don't disagree but ultimately it's going to be which ever option goes down the easiest with the general population: 'eat less beef' or 'continue eating beef'. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for reducing the amount of meat we eat in general, and I've been doing that myself, but from my uneducated view-point lab grown meat appears to offer greater benefits, and fewer disbenefits compared to trying to persuade people to adopt the current alternatives. Not just from a environmental point of view but ethical as well.

And don't forget: we can do both. We can research improvements to lab grown meat and other alternatives at the same time. These shouldn't be binary choices.

  • That's true as of now, but if we stopped subsidising farmers and spent that funding on lab grow technology then, much like solar, it would go from expensive niche to cheap mainstream a whole lot quicker. All decisions like this do is slow that process down.

  • OK, thanks. That's sounds important, so I'll look into it. I can understand you're frustrated. I imagine it's hard work getting people to understand, and it seems like something you've identified as important.

  • I understand. I don't want to tell you how to live your life online, obviously, but if I may - please be wary of the influence that just being around negative content can bring. It sounds ridiculous, but other people's negativity can bring you down as well. Misery loves company as they say. Just make sure you take some time out to look after your own mental well being, you know?

You mentioned you don't have anyone else to share your feelings with online? I can't promise it'll help, but you can DM me if you feel the need to chat, OK?.

  • OK, so help me out. What should people imply from your words? I assure you I'm not trying to play 'stupid games' I'm genuinely just trying to have a conversation.

  • That's good that you're working on it. I'm sure that must be hard work, so good for you. In terms of reading people's emotions digitally, I'm sure you can see how someone's emotions could be inferred via the words they type online? And the words you're typing seem very hostile for no obvious reason.

  • OK, but can you see how calling people 'fucking morons' and saying they will all die might be misconstrued as sounding angry? This is obviously a topic you care about, else you wouldn't have commented at all. Do you think that adjusting your perceived tone might improve how you interact with people on a topic you care about?

  • I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. I'm genuinely curious as to why you're getting so angry over this, that's all.

  • There's nothing to be gained by looking at bad news all the time. You must balance it with good news, if for nothing else than to stay informed. There are more positive communities on Lemmy: goodnews@kbin.social or upliftingnews@lemmy.world for example, but you're right negativity, doomerism and defeatism is prevalent on the platform and you absolutely should leave if you find it affecting your mental health.

Please take the time to visit at least some of those websites I linked via my first comment. It does wonders being reminded that the world isn't doom and gloom all the time like the media likes to pretend it is.

  • Doomscrolling or seeking out bad news is really bad for your health. https://www.openaccessgovernment.org/what-is-doomscrolling-and-why-is-it-bad-for-us/143139/

If you feel the (understandable) need to share your issues with others there are much healthier was to do this. Bad news is literally addictive and it is important to break that habit https://www.fastcompany.com/90269566/how-to-stop-your-brains-addiction-to-bad-news

If you still find it necessary to scroll bad news, maybe offset by ending with some positive news as well? https://www.groovnow.com/blog/where-to-find-good-news-online

It's important to try and stay happy, friend, now more than ever.

  • The only guarantee of failure is not to try.
