  • Motors will be more popular to swap as most vehicles use the batteries as part of the sub frame and there's less of a risk of fire if the BMS or charging circuit does not agree.

    Electric motors are also easy to obtain as they are used in applications outside of vehicles meaning the only difficult part are mounting, cooling, and geting the motor talking to the car's controller (there are aftermarket controllers for tesla motors already available)

  • It really depends on the platform and manufacturer lock downs. Over volting the motors could be an avenue for increased performance at the cost of range.

    Motor and battery swaps are entirely possible however are fairly expensive while requiring a pretty good understanding of electrical engineering.

    Right now the big thing is to swap electric powertrains into vintage chassis.

  • This is a WAYYYYYY better insensitive for everyone than offering free charging at charge points. It should move people who could charge at home but do not in order to save money back to their home charger freeing up DC fast chargers for those who actually need it.

  • The problem with battery trains is that locomotives hardly sit around long enough to charge unless it's some sort of switcher or in for maintenance. Really the only use case for battery locomotives outside of switchers is passenger service where it's fairly common for a train to sit for eight plus hours. Amtrak and Siemens are actually doing this with 15 of the new airo trainsets which will run on the empire line. The trainsets will specifically run on battery while within the new York city tunnels where diesel locomotives are only allowed to operate under emergency.

  • No need for specifying an exact number, something like 'no one over the age of the national average life expectancy minus fifteen years shall be eligible to hold an elected seat'. Tying it to the national life expectancy allows for the age to keep up with modern advances without requiring additional legislation while incentivizing politicians to improve lifespans if they want to continue holding power.

    I do recommend manually installing it yourself if you end up liking it so you can understand how all the gears mesh together if you ever have to troubleshoot.

  • I've tried odoo and while I like it, a lot of the accounting side of things is lock behind a pay wall although there are third party plug ins that accomplish the same tasks.

    Once I have more free time I'm going to test out Erpnext as it's 100% open source with no pay walls if you self host it.

  • Mini splits air conditioners (the one on the right) have some major advantages over central air.

    With central air there's one big condenser and evaporator for the whole house and dampers are used to block the chilled/heated air to zones that aren't requesting for air. Since all the zones share the same air source, the more zones that need heated/cooled the slower it'll take. This system also prevents one zone from requesting heating while another requests cooling as the system can only do one at a time.

    Now with mini splits each zone gets it's own condenser and evaporator meaning each zone is free to heat/cool to each zones needs and airflow isn't effected by other zones. The biggest reason why mini splits are better though is because if there is an issue you'll only lose one zone instead of the entire HVAC as you would with a central unit.

  • From my understanding, the old acpi only allowed for the kernel to request three levels of voltage/frequency on zen2 based CPUs. The new P-state driver allows for finer grain control of the voltage/frequency which may lead to a lower power draw and faster clocks for a given task.

  • I know you are saying Google doesn't have to worry about redundancy to simplify the math but I think that makes it completely useless.

    Redundancy is not just about having another copy incase of data loss but more importantly for enterprises redundancy allows for more throughput. If each video was on a single hard drive the site would not be able to function as even the fastest multi actuator hard drive can only do 524 MB/s in a perfect vacuum.

  • I've spent the last two weeks on getting a k3s cluster working and I've had nothing but problems but it has been a great catalysts for learning new tools like ansible and load balancers. I finally got the cluster working last night. If anyone else is having wierd issues with the cluster timing out ETCD needs fast storage. Moving my VMs from my spinning rust to a cheap SSD fixed all my problems.

  • Coming from someone who very much endorses amtrak and passenger rail, I think someone is abusing our tax dollars to make six figure jobs for their friends or family. Just look how much money is going into repeatedly studying if the stampede pass would be a viable passenger rail line.

  • The classic choice would be fractal design's node 304 which fits six 3.5" drive in an ITX form factor. There's also Silverstone's CS381 which while being larger can fit eight hotswappable 3.5" drives and a micro atx motherboard.

    Even if you go ITX you don't have to feel limited by the lack of PCIe slots. Since m.2 uses the PCIe protocol it's very easy to adapt it to your needs such as to an additional PCIe 4x slot. There are even m.2 10GBe cards in both intel and Realtek flavors.

    Side question, what coral TPU do you have because it was my understanding that they use m.2, mini pcie, or USB and not the full size pcie slot?
