  • There seems to be a lot of resentment about brands honoring pride month. I get that it's mostly a ploy for more customers, but even so I don't think it deserves the criticism it gets. Support for the community is widespread and mainstream and I think that should be celebrated in all its forms. If this public corporate pandering ever goes away it should be a red flag that the mainstream support has waivered and everyone should be worried.

  • I took some antenna theory courses back in the day and yes, you are correct. Some frequencies reflect off the upper atmosphere so there would be a longer effective range at higher incident angles (going into the top of the head) but it wouldn't completely block radio waves. Going from memory, the wavelengths that reflect off the upper atmosphere are long enough that a tin foil hat wouldn't cause much interference anyways.

    TLDR: Fashionable, but not practical.

  • It would be so awesome if they went employee owned. I get the impression the employees are people who are passionate about video games. I feel that they would choose leadership that is both good for the community and good for the long-term health of the company.

  • I'm very confused. The president can't know the composition of Congress during the campaign because all of the Reps are on the same ballot as the president. Are you saying prospective candidates should always say "If I'm elected and we have the house and Senate I will..." to cover their asses? I think most people understand those ramifications.

  • You think one imaginary number is crazy? Just wait till you learn about quaternions. One real number and 3 imaginary numbers forming a four dimensional coordinate system. It's the basis for quantum mechanics and most video game engines. Who thinks of this shit?

  • This is what has not been leveraged by almost any learning institution! The people that are explaining a concept to students for the first time and people who are good at answering questions while the student is practicing/digesting the information do not need to be the same people! This is how you increase the efficiency of education, you specialize roles.

  • I honestly needed to hear this today, so thank you. I'm at work trying to work out someone else's uncommented code and have just been staring at it mumbling to myself. I'm new to the position so I'm anxious my new coworkers will think I'm just dicking around... This is the validation I needed. Thanks everyone!

  • You're right. I was being very Ameri-centric. I subconsciously interchange free speech and the first amendment even though they are not equal.

I do believe that individuals and private institutions should have this right to react though. I don't agree with how it was used in this situation, but I absolutely believe the hospital should have the right to terminate someone based on the opinions they openly share.

If this same employee was sharing an anti-vax opinion I would want the hospital to be able to remove them from the role.

  • That is not what free speech means.

Free speech means the government cannot prohibit free speech. A private institution can take any lawful action they want in retaliation/reaction.

I agree that it really sucks that saying something true can get you fired, but this isn't an infringement of the first amendment.

  • It's a double edged sword. If they allow this to happen, democracy crumbles under a new admin. If they do anything to deter authoritarians getting into power is technically anti-democratic too.

Either this admin undermines the belief in democracy by stopping an authoritarian administration to participate in elections or they allow the authoritarians to run and hope the electorate aren't complete idiots (in a voting system rigged towards the authoritarians via the electoral college).
