  • But then the problem isn’t capitalism, it’s corruption. Power corrupts, and Socialism places more power in fewer hands - I don’t see how that helps the environment.

I agree that corporations (especially big oil, coal, and legacy auto) are paying off politicians to slow progress on environmental issues. But abolishing those corporations and giving the power to unaccountable beuraucrats would be even worse.

  • You’re missing how a free market is meant to work.

In a free market, ALL costs are captured and paid for at whatever rate the market determines is fair. At the moment, polluters aren’t paying for CO2 emissions - the cost of those emissions is being paid by society. In economics, that’s called an Externality, and most economists agree that the governments role is to capture externalities, because they’re a deviation from a proper free market.

To fix this, the government could enforce a rule that says all companies must be carbon neutral, and then allow businesses that are carbon-negative to trade their excess with companies who are carbon-positive. versions of this are being done in many places. The issue is the inertia of the existing systems, and the fact that you can’t just make these changes overnight.

  • I’ve worked on serious projects involving LiDAR. The LiDAR you need at these speeds and with this resolution cost almost as much as an Electric Car - it’s too expensive to reach wide adoption. But video processing with CNNs/RNNs has proven you can build the same level of data with cameras. You don’t even need binocular cameras now - if objects are moving you can generate binocular data by combining IMU data with time-series imagery.

As I understand it, Tesla’s delays aren’t related to image capture (which is where LiDAR could help). They’re related to trying to find universal actions to take against an almost infinite number of possible scenarios (mostly actions by human drivers).

  • On windows, if you check the properties of the file, there’s a button to remove metadata.

On iPhone, if you go into your photos and drag a photo up, you can click “adjust” and remove or edit the location and time/date (it will still have camera data).

  • You’ll need to get a fire rated media safe, not just a fireproof safe. A regular fireproof safe will keep the internal temperature below 175C if exposed to a 30 minute wood fire - what you’d typically experience in a home fire. The 175C is to stop paper from igniting, but at that temp your HDDs would be toast.

A data/media safe should maintain an internal temp of under 60C if exposed to the same fire. That means it needs to have much more thermal insulation, and as a consequence it will be significantly bigger and more expensive. To fit in the whole enclosure, you’ll probably have to pay more for the safe than the HDDs.

  • Hotels are great if you need 1 bed and nothing else. But hotels get expensive fast if you need an extra room for a kid. Or you take a pet. Or you need to wash your clothes. Or you would like a kitchen.

  • Your Snapraid config looks ok, although I think you’re meant to put a copy of the content file on each drive (you need it to perform recovery). Also, did you change your parity drive from a 6TB to 14TB? Your parity drive needs to be the same size (or bigger) than the biggest drive in the array.

I’m guessing the issue is in your mergerfs setup?

  • As someone who used to have a lot of time for gaming, and now has basically no time for gaming, I really like an RPG that puts quality ahead of quantity. The Outer Worlds and Far Cry 6 were the two that stand out in my mind.

I’ve had to skip Diablo 4 because I know I just don’t have the time, and I’m looking forward to Starfield with some worry because it’s going to be Skyrim size.

  • The thing is, America (many Americans anyway) are continually screaming at everyone online about how America is the best country in the world and everywhere else is a shithole - despite very few measures supporting that.

If you insist on telling everyone you’re the best, when you have so many serious flaws, people are going to mock you for it.
