  • I know the implied better solution to your example story would be for there to not be a standard that the specification has to conform to, but sometimes there is a reason for such a standard, in which case getting rid of the standard is just as bad as the AI channel in the example, and the real solution is for the two humans to actually take their work seriously.

  • Lost Skies!

Build an airship and explore floating islands in search of ancient knowledge while fighting against robots and flying fish. It’s a spiritual successor to World’s Adrift, if you’ve heard of that.

The demo is an early build and is buggy and laggy, but it is super fun.

  • Quick recap, in quidditch, scoring goals scores 10 or 20 points, catching the snitch scores 150 points

Idk how canon this is, but I remember a quidditch computer game I used to play (on Windows XP) where usually when you scored your team would get the ball through the hoops multiple times in rapid succession, so scoring like 5 times in a row. Like if in basketball, if your team caught the ball after making a hoop you could pass it back and shoot again. That at least makes the point value of the snitch less egregious. Everything else you mentioned is very true though.

  • I mean so is MP3. If you really want to be a non-proprietary purist you need to rely on Opus for a lossy audio compression, which is not as widely supported in music players as MP3 or AAC.

  • iTunes sells drm-free music downloads. The still do, if you go to the iTunes Store and not the Apple Music streaming surface.

There are better options out there though, like BandCamp.

  • Only downsides of Signal are 1. It’s centralized 2. You have to sign up with a phone number.

It’s secure, cross platform, and easy to set up and use.

Probably most importantly, it’s a similar experience to using other popular texting apps and the set-up experience is familiar to anyone singing into any big-brand-name app, making it a relatively easy sell to non-techies.

  • Related: this is why the audio quality of phone calls is so bad. It’s using what’s basically a predecessor of mp3 compression at a very low bitrate. Originally because that’s what the bandwidth limits were like, but now just for the sake of backwards compatibility. That’s why making a VOIP call sounds so much better: it’s using modern audio codecs and a higher bitrate.

  • I’m thinking about buying an Apple TV because I don’t like the built-in software on my TV, and “big corp that isn’t Google” sounds like a reasonable compromise between privacy and integration with big media providers.
