  • In the end I'm learning how everything works "behind the scenes" with a shock therapy (disclaimer: while I didn't use Linux as my personal desktop, I have a decade of experience with Linux servers, otherwise this migration would have been impossible to understand for me)

I was expecting for example an easy toggle for dark mode instead needs to set several constants on the terminal (for GTK, for qt, and so on)

Everything needs one hour of searching but I'm documenting everything for future reference in a markdown file

And I had to set home as a git repository because otherwise a literal comma in a wrong spot would crash everything and I wouldn't be able to revert it

For example I wanted to show the WiFi status on the taskbar (default doesn't show) and I forgot a comma in the JSON configuration file. The taskbar (waybar) didn't even start next time and I was presented with a completely empty wallpaper lol

  • Instead of buying a license for a game for $70 you subscribe to a rental service that gives you access to 500 games for $10/month.

Or, instead of buying a $500 console or a $800 PC you just buy a $60 controller and you stream those games running on "the cloud" (=someone else's console) for $15/month

Problem is that the service is provided by Microsoft at a loss and when they'll get enough critical mass, they'll enshittify it.

The economic proposition is good, but I think it's just to teach gamers that "you'll own nothing and you'll be happy"

There's a way to ignore the native Linux build on steam and install the windows one?

    Mildly Infuriating @lemmy.world

The driver for my mouse occupies over 1 gb

  • Yesterday I installed cachyos and I was shocked to see that the 3gb install image was actually a net install and I couldn't install it offline. I used my phone as hotspot thinking "how much data would download it anyway, maybe it just needs internet to do geo2ip for suggesting locale" (it actually does that) but instead it downloaded another 3gb

  • Imagine a country, they spent billions over the last two centuries to build influence and they got to the top. Foreigners are willing to pay thousands of dollars for getting a degree in such country but no, let them go to a different country and get influenced by somebody else

  • From some YouTube videos I'm intrigued in cachyos + hyprland, do you think it's a good idea to wipe my laptop and switch to that?

Edit: I wiped my laptop and now I have no idea how to connect to wifi and all the settings because I assumed it had a gui for that like kde instead is all from terminal lol

  • Since 2023 they need you to fill the online immigration form online from this app or in a web app inside WeChat. If you don't have a phone, you can do an extremely long line to a kiosk where you essentially do the same.

Immigration office then they want to see the qr code generated by that app, it can be a screenshot and you can generate it while abroad (they also wanted the legacy handwritten slip, maybe it was just for a temporary measure waiting for other ports to update)

Source: I personally experienced it in Guangzhou airport

  • After a quick analysis of the app it looks like used by an activity licensed by a japanese software house that shines it to see if it has a live person in front of the camera or a picture of it. The legitimate use of this in the app it's because you can apply to visa, passports and certificates remotely without the need of going to the embassy (you still need to go in person for identification though, as they don't really trust it)

  • It's not forced but the paper slip for immigration now is online, so it's this app or the mini app inside WeChat (or waiting a couple hours in the line for the clerk that basically signs up a WeChat for you and inserts your data in the MFA mini app)

  • Even when you enter China the officials won't check your phone. They just tell you to install their "com.gov.mfa" apk downloaded from a server with invalid SSL certificate and totally not suspicious permissions like:

    android.permission.FOREGROUND_SERVICE

  • Don't need any coding skills for doing apps. You can do it with a single well constructed prompt (and 400 other prompts trying to fix the initial bugs and all the dozens other bugs introduced prompt after prompt)

  • nah it's a lazy fork so seeing how he chooses people (they're either cheap or friends of friends or both) "truth" can easily have a totally new security issue

maybe the server has a root password that's "trump454748$$$"
