  • In this and other similar contexts, when "it" isn't really referring to anything specific, you can kind of consider it to be "The General State of Existence".

    It's raining.

    It's cold.

    It is what it is.

    Make the best of it.

    It's Thursday.

    It's Friday.

    Friday.

    Gotta get down on Friday.

  • Tough to say. He'll need never livers and kidneys no matter how good the intermediate care is. Not saying buying a healthy young person for spare parts isn't beyond him.

You'll know he's grokked how badly he's fucked his body once he starts up an organ printing/regeneration company. Which I guarantee he will, assuming by his calculation he figures out the reality of his situation in time. If he finds out late...? A bunch of Ugrher people are going to be getting blood tests and one of them is going to disappear along with any records they ever existed at all.

  • Another consideration might be how far your "town" is from a more major center.

A town with a population of 1000 might not feel that rural if it's 10 miles down the road from a city of a million.

If the next closest center > 5,000pop is 250 miles away... Perhaps a different story.

I've hear it said that in Europe 100km is considered a long distance and in North America 100 years is considered a long time.

  • It's like Stockholm syndrome.

Like, yeah, I'm here, I'm in it, I gotta do it so I don't starve or freeze...

But you're never going to get me to say it's a meritocracy. Or efficient.

Some people will though. I think it's less about propeganda than it is about fear. Like if they take Zeus' name in vain they'll catch a lightning bolt.

  • Tbh after working for decades in the corporate world, I see SIGNIFICANTLY more similarities between that and a fucking game... Or jr high drama, than I do w/ academia.

Capitalism is a fucking joke and anyone who doesn't understand it's a stupid game is delusional

  • You would be shocked by the homogeneousness of even employers who are hiring STEM. Tribalism is real. They just chalk up the je ne sais qois to "fit"... But you take a step back and suddenly...

  • Yeah. I feel like almost everyone misunderstands Jon. He calls out shitty government behavior.

Republicans being a bursting cornucopia are statistically certain to spend more time in his sights, but Jon has never given Dems a "pass". Also, his monologues aren't just "Republicans dumb", they're incredibly informative about how the systems are supposed to work. He sneaks in legitimate government literacy lessons. Jon is a genius of our time.

This is what every other comedian trying to be Jon... Even on the tonight show, doesn't seem to have internalized.

Jon deserved a break... But his original retirement left such a void.

  • If you read the article, he's not accusing Biden of anything.

He's saying that Biden wasn't behind the things he PREVIOUSLY was railing on him over (the border specifically) and saying his team and advisors "took over" the presidency behind the scenes, and it was their agenda that they snuck behind Biden's back because they knew he was too sick to notice.

So, I agree every accusation is an admission, but it's important to actually read the accusations so you know what Trump is admitting to: in this case it's being old and senile and his administration is taking advantage of him and are pushing their own agendas behind his old and senile back.

  • Someone made that point w/ autos, and I pointed out that even though by any standard of individual wealth they're exorbitant, they still only work out to a couple dollars per unit. A 20% teriff on aluminum and steel would still obliterate per-unit savings if the c-suite stopped being paid at all.

  • Depends on the items. Some things have tight enough margins that they'll have to be raised.

I expect some companies will try to cut costs by cannibalizing themselves in the short term by cutting workforce. Nobody intends to report to their shareholders that profits are down.
