  • It's amazing to me how willing people are to play the part of the shrill reee-ing blue haired archetype foil that Republicans created.

I'm going to get drunk and ruin a wedding. THAT will fix the world.

No, dumbass, it's going to validate everything fox news has been telling their base about the left. You have absolutely no self awareness, and will ruin your brother's wedding as if he was the CEO of Shell even though he's a construction worker in rural Montana.

Be the strawman the Republicans want you to be!

  • Could be. Tolerance and assholes aren't binary states, so it depends on the context what the measure is.

If someone intentionally steps on an ant at a funeral, and I decide I'm not going to let it slide and interrupt the eulogy to give an impassioned lecture about how needless killing is immoral, even if it's an ant, I'd be an asshole.

If I saw some schoolyard bullies beating up a kid and I didn't intervene I'd be an asshole.

  • "I waggle my dick in front of my brother and he punches it every time"

From OPs context, and they could certainly clarify, but it sounds like they just won't shut up about class struggle, wealth inequality... For which for the terminally online there is an endless appetite for and you can find a cozy echo chamber to nuzzle up in.

So his brother doesn't share the same views on Elon musk.ok. he obviously knows this by now. Why does he insist on asking about it? Why ask a question that has no bearing on either of your lives where if you don't get an agreement on you'll be so mad you'll not go to their wedding when you know the answer ahead of time.

They're both assholes. He shouldn't go to the wedding but honestly based on the context as presented I don't think the brother is going to be upset about it.

  • I guess on the one hand, it wouldn't make a material difference because the US can and would criminalize it and the American market for the product would be non existent...

But on the OTHER hand it would make very little impact in terms of dollars and cents....

But I guess on the OTHER hand it would trigger disproportional responses because Trump is heavily funded by tech bros...

I suppose on the other hand, though, we could pivot our tech sector creating a product that will need to be locally dismantled once a friendlier president gets elected...

    But, on the other hand...

I'm all for FOSS, jailbreaking, owning what is yours, right to repair... Etc etc, but trying to frame this as an appropriate or meaningful response to terriffs is nonsense. It's drawing a line between two things that aren't connected. And nobody would give this proposal the time of day on its own merits, the only reason it's even making the rounds on the socials is that Cory said it.

  • He wasn't moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, signalling in no uncertain terms his personal position.

I think a lot of people really misunderstood the no-lose scenario Trump engineered wrt Israel.

He got to call him Genocide Joe, while hammering on the debates saying, and I quote that Harris and Joe HATE Israel.

I have absolutely no doubt that both Russia and Israel timed their respective beligerences to try to politically hog-tie Biden knowing Trump could hammer him and once he was in give them both carte blanche.

Like, I have many many issues with how Biden specifically didn't do the right things in the middle east, but he was attempting to thread a political needle to not hand Trump the ammunition he needed to get re-elected. In retrospect, and I'm sure Joe would agree, that given the reality that Trump was getting the big seat again, he should have just said "fuck it" and done the morally correct things.

And things, now, are going to get so much worse. Trump's teams position is that it's acceptable for Israel to just take and settle everything that the Palestinians had. There no longer is an alternative view that involves coexistence from the US government.

Specifically wrt to the middle east, there was a bad option and a worse option. Had Harris won, the political realities could have allowed the expenditure of political capital to do the right (or at least righter) thing. Trump won't even consider it.

  • Yes it is, and saying it isn't is normalizing a terrifying thing.

The crux of your argument is that someone isn't lying is nobody believes them. Ergo, Donald Trump isn't a liar.

This is the EXACT fucking playbook you see in Russia and North Korea. The way you are thinking right now is SPECIFICALLY how dictators WANT you to think. It excuses lies and paves the way to the concept of there being no such thing as objective truth because everyone is lying anyways, but they're not even lies because you were never going to believe it anyways. You'll just exhaustedly shrug and choose a dissonance that's a lower energy mental state.

  • I need to crack my neck frequently and I can confidently say that isn't what's happening here.

For sure, if you want to lay out alternative explanations, feel free, but he 100% is not cracking his neck.

  • That's irrelevant. When he says "I believe X", he is professing that he believes something. Just because we know he's lying doesn't mean he isn't saying it.

That kinda logic scares the hell out of me, btw. People are just so numb to it that it's like their brains are short circuiting.

  • Pretty much everything the UCP has ever done has been strictly to prop up o&g.

Pause on renewable power generation, despite AB having tons of sun and wind? Tf? Nobody is asking you to pay for it, simply approve the projects! AB was responsible for 92% of renewable growth in Canada in 2023. It's there, it makes sense.

Inviting AI data centers? The notoriously power hungry ones? When you've kneecapped renewable gen growth?

Trying to self manage the AB pension fund? Gee I wonder what industries the government would target for investment w/ that fund. Probably strictly the ones with the highest rates of return for the investors... Or... Maybe you'd cherry-pick investments with a worse long-term return to prop a specific industry. Who knows.

  • It's worse than that: It was on track to be, in 2023 AB accounted for 92% of renewables growth in Canada.

Then Smith put on the "renewables pause"...

And now AB is courting AI companies to build datacenters in southern AB.

Like, it's all such a fucking scam to induce demand on oil and gas.

That being said, I really really wish we could actually export at scale. Canada could absolutely kneecap Russias ability to wage war simply by undercutting their oil and gas sector.

We don't have to artificially create local demand. We could/should service legacy demand and fuck Putin while doing it.

  • I agree that it's a disgrace that Smith is breaking ranks, I agree that Canada is better together. She's clearly angling to try and cut her own deals with Trump, which is laying directly into the plan of any fascist playing the divide and conquer game.

  • I mean, in fairness, bombardier shed 1000 jobs and the federal government couldn't show up fast enough with bags of money. Suncor shed 1000 jobs like the same day, not a peep.

So just to be abundantly clear, the feds absolutely play favourites, but if you think it's in the west then you haven't been paying attention.

  • The premise was that it was a gradual decline to that point though. There would have been millions of opportunities to right the ship up until that point. It's optimistic that at some point, at SOME point, people will decide to do what the smartest people think. But the movie is pretty pessimistic that there was entire generations that didn't ever do that even once.

  • Would be nice if open-source aggregators like Lemmy allowed users to "Subscribe" to community developed algorithms.

I'd love to (attempt) to build an "ethical" algorithm for content sorting, have it be open-source, and be able to have clients use it without having to actually modify the client itself.
