  • I read that last year, actually. Potential spoilers:

Just difference of opinion but I wasn't a fan. I obviously think the subject matter is interesting and I liked the sociopolitical basis of the story. But I felt it was bogged way down by an author who was trying to make several parts into some weirdly verbose report to give it a sense of realism (I seem to recall an entire chapter being a written-out list of fictional committee names that were being created to fight climate change). At the same time, when he was writing about the terrorist attacks like swarms of drones attacking infrastructure, it felt really vague and Hollywood, dare I say, even boomer-esque. Just a bit lofty for the sake of action.

You're in good company though, I remember reddit fuckin loved that book so it's probably just not for me. I'm also sensitive to hype and it didn't live up to it.

  • I'd never heard of Xlite, that's great. I can imagine what you mean, current stock Windows is always chugging on some unecessary telemetry in the background. Some days I want to buy an old system to put XP on for the nostalgia.

  • Yeah compared to rootkits, micro transactions, unfinished games at launch, publisher launchers, seems there's no shortage of things to whinge about in the current gaming space.

This game has a couple of those things but generally has been the best co-op shooting experience since Left for Dead 2 to me. Helldivers 1 was a blast too though.

I feel like the level of whiplash this game is getting is similar to that of Cyberpunk but I could be exaggerating. If the game wasn't so successful at checking people's boxes at the outset, I think we wouldn't be having this discussion today. It being so popular is why there are a ton of people freaking out. I'm not saying it's not warranted, just observing.

Needless to say, Sony is never going to allow an account linking grace period in any of their games going forward. It looks like they gave the kids candy and then took it away, better for them to just not give the candy in the first place.

Edit to add: I also find it hard to stomach the amount of ire to some degree because the creative devs had nothing to do with this and clearly put a ton of energy and love into the game. They even have a unique connection to the community through the bespoke game master, Joel. I'm pretty torn about it: I want the gaming industry to stop this full speed charge toward enshittification like, literally, every other aspect of life now. But I don't want developers to have to not only worry about mass layoffs and internal industry enshittification on top of reactionary blowback from the people they make the games for.

I will say I have the luxury of living in a country that's supported by PSN and already have an account, so it colors my opinions.

  • The daddy issues and fireballs are very on point actually, a lot of those boys have really vacant, mean, or just plain generic dads, and then the kids end up working for them the rest of their life. Thankfully I just visited a few times.

  • I've spent an unfortunate amount of time in Oxford and on that campus, and I would rather gnaw off my right arm at the elbow than to have to see those smug, punchable faces again, in person. The video was like someone opening a vault in my head I had tossed the key for.

It's really disconcerting seeing people like that, essentially maxing out at that age as individuals. Beyond their college years they just age and continue to put others down for the fun of being assholes. They will go far. Some of them will even go on to do big things, like further the class divide.

And wear what you want but fuck that shit those kids wear. Bargain bin ass looking Ken dolls.

  • I'm very much a tech person and can confirm for me personally: T9-Word in combination with physical keys was a much faster, one-handed, and even eyes-off experience. Even when I upgraded to a phone with a slide out full physical keyboard (Samsung Intensity), T9 was still faster. For any word that had repeated keys back-to-back, my hand knew to press the right arrow which would move the cursor to the next position.

I'm purely talking about typing while not looking at the screen (for instance in a pocket like OP mentioned). Not sure why you brought screen resolution into it or media players. I'm not a vintage tech apologist--I'm typing this on an S22 with SwiftKey and it's fine minus a few mistakes. But there was no way I could do this blindfolded. I'd have exited the app and be typing something regrettable into Slack by now.
