It's lossless, it's meant for 2D and drawn graphics. Can't do that much with lossless compression.

I think PNG is a good format even today. It's lossless compressed, so there isn't that much you can squeeze out of that with new algorithms as you can out of lossy formats with new and smarter approaches.

Sadly, PNG is being terribly misused on the internet too. What it's good for is simple drawn graphics, which it can compress to oblivion. So it's perfect for screenshots of say, your operating system's windows. I took a sshot as I'm typing this, and it came out as 190 kB. Not bad.

But what it's so commonly used for, is people taking screenshots of photos such as from Instagram, and then reposting them. So instead of a tiny and shitty 50 kB IG picture, you get a 1.5MB PNG screenshots. Some then recompress it to a 1.5MB JPG for "maximum quality" when they realise they can't upload PNG to photo sites.

I also very often encounter huge PNG photos with their extensions changed to JPG, and I don't know how or why that is happening.

So was QuickTime and RealMedia. Today we know how to compress things better.

Webp is an image format.

Jpg is ancient, and gif, holy shit gif is from stone age.

I dunno, if you're playing a video, you probably want x264 or better these days, no? For music, we use some variant of mp4 or lossless at this point.

Yet with pictures, for some reason we insist on the old shitty stuff.

Using jpeg or gif is like using mp1 for music and VideoCD for video. Come on now.

The only problem with webp is that there's quality loss if you convert an already compressed jpeg into webp with high compression rate, like some web sites do. That can suck, but I don't know how else to get people to use more modern formats. Otherwise we'd be using ancient formats into the 24th century.

Maybe you have the key disabled, look in settings under preferences. There's a bunch of stuff you might want to tweak.

Why is everyone obsessed with constant updates? It's not broken, there's nothing to fix. It's a keyboard, I prefer it to be fast, reliable and not phone home.

I don't need some bloated mess that will take 10 seconds to start and require a gigabyte of RAM because the devs need to push an update every week with new useless crap without testing it.

Fediverse also makes it potentially easier to scan for this stuff. You can just connect a new server to the network and if the material is on federated servers, then you can find it (probably). While if it's some private forum or even the dark web, I assume it's a lot more difficult.

The other thing is, most regular servers defederate from suspicious stuff already. Like pretty much nobody federates with that one shota instance, and they only serve drawm stuff (AFAIK). So I don't know if you can even say servers like that are a part of the Fediverse in the first place.

I have no stake in this thing, but I can say condolences and you're doing good. I can imagine needing to get your mind off things. When I was dealing with a death, I didn't want to be left alone in the same flat for 5 minutes.

I've dealt with paramedics a bunch of times and they always leave a mess behind. I can understand that since they have more urgent things to do (I only wonder about the biohazard rating of such trash), but combined with this situation, it can certainly leave a shitty feeling.

Give OpenBoard with gesture typing a shot. No gifs and stuff, but gesture typing works together with suggestions, unlike either base OB or Floris. Someone casually mentioned it a few weeks ago and damn how much my life changed.

You can buy fairly bulky leather cases with place for your entire wallet, with a flip screen cover, and that will probably protect the phone even better than an armor case. Or something else... If there's one product there's no shortage of, it's phone cases. Especially if you have a popular model.
