  • Well, they have almost limitless billionaire foundation money to manipulate the population. Billionaires control most media and push the conversation right across the spectrum. They control many state governments, the house, and the supreme court. They have right wing and anti-US foreign governments aiding their movement for their own interests. They definitely have the right infrastructure and conditions in place to make this happen sadly.

  • Money existed before capitalism. Capitalism started in the 1700s. Money far predates capitalism. Plus, my comment is that capitalism must be regulated by outside regulators like governments. Conservatives have pushed deregulation forever and it’s made things worse. Capitalism worked far better in the heavy regulation days after WW2.

  • China is authoritarian capitalism with communism for their under classes. They are the worlds 2nd largest economy. Their capitalist practices are just as, if not more reckless than Americas. Just because they dress it up different doesn’t mean they aren’t capitalists. They have the 2nd most billionaires in the world. So sick of everyone acting like evil begins and ends with the West because they live there and don’t get exposed to other news enough. The whole world is fucked, it’s not just “the west.”

  • I live in a similar red area and democrats need to come back here for the local change to happen. More than half of local seats only have a Republican option. There are almost as many Libertarians running as democrats. The democrats gave up on way too many rural areas.

  • Didn’t realize you were also in the industry. I think the word “Instantly” was my qualm. I don’t think anything with internet infrastructure can change in a time frame anyone would consider instant. Otherwise, I agree with you.

  • Speaking as a high level ISP worker, you have no idea how archaic and disorganized the internet infrastructure of this country is. Nothing happens instantly, even if they made ISPs legally liable. The likely outcome of that would be jacked up rates and lots of workers thrown under the bus who are already overworked. Investor capitalism leeching all profits away from upgrading equipment and hiring enough workers to secure things properly is the issue. As it has become the issue with almost every major business in every industry in the west these days. Not saying legal liability is a bad idea, but it will still take years to get resolved even so. Internet should be a public utility anyway.

  • No, but any bias in what content gets boosted is bad for public discourse. Too many people think Tiktok is fine, but it being so heavily influenced by an authoritarian dictatorship makes it a bad platform. We need platforms that aren’t controlled by these opaque powers. I wasn’t saying Facebook or the like was the answer at all if you read my post.

  • An authoritarian government as evil as China’s having power over that platform compromises it. Tiktok escalates content that hurts western governments but downplays content critical of China. How many times have you heard about the ongoing Uyghur genocide and the over 1 million Uyghurs still imprisoned in China on Tiktok? Israel's genocide of Palestinians is boosted everywhere because it makes America look bad. While all attention brought to work against genocide is good, it’s important to note China has their finger on the scale pushing down content against their interests. China does things just as worthy of Tiktok activism and it is ignored by the algorithm on purpose.

Decentralized social media is really the best option for public discourse in the long run.
